Following several years of individual tracks instead of a full-fledged album, Chance the Rapper has at last unveiled a new studio project titled “STAR LINE.” It’s been over six years since his previous work. Undoubtedly, there are compelling factors that led to this extended gap in his music releases.
Upon its release, Chance’s latest album, “The Big Day,” was unexpectedly panned by critics across the board. Known for his upbeat rapping style and a devoted fanbase cultivated throughout the 2010s, Chance had high hopes for the album. However, the quality of the album fell short of expectations, leading to years of criticism for him in the public eye.
Reflecting on Chance’s comeback, it provides us an opportunity to reminisce about the misstep his last album represented, and also contemplate other instances in rap music where highly anticipated albums ended up being disappointing flops. Here are seven such examples that embody this description perfectly.
7 rap flops that didn’t meet the moment
Chance the Rapper – The Big Day (2019)
On a significant note in Chance’s professional journey, the much-anticipated release marked a pivotal moment. Contrary to his popular mixtapes that catapulted him to fame, this album was a chaotic and cheesy production, filled with excessive production yet lacking maturity. This pop-rap fusion lacked direction, showcasing some of Chance’s weakest lyrics, droning on for an extended period, and proving to be a grating experience overall.
Lupe Fiasco – Lasers (2011)
In the latter part of the 2000s, Lupe Fiasco firmly established himself as a gifted artist in the conscious hip-hop scene. However, his third album, “Lasers“, fell short of expectations when released, as it presented a significantly more commercial and tamed sound compared to his previous work. This change was a stark contrast and undeniably a step down from his earlier efforts. Lupe seemed out of his comfort zone, and this was evident in the final product.
Lil Wayne – Tha Carter VI (2025)
Indeed, Lil Wayne has released some subpar projects in the past, such as his “Rebirth” album, but he consistently delivered on his “Tha Carter” series. However, this year’s sixth installment fell short of expectations. It was packed with half-baked or poor ideas, and it seemed that quality control had taken a back seat. In “Tha Carter VI,” Wayne unfortunately leaned into his less favorable habits, resulting in a disappointing output.
Nas – Nastradamus (1999)
Over a span of five years, Nas transitioned remarkably from creating possibly the most acclaimed hip-hop album ever, Illmatic, to the release of this body of work. Unfortunately, Nastradamus was met with harsh criticism from the outset, and justifiably so. Fans had high expectations for Nas, and many tracks on this album, including his rendition of “Africa” by Toto and the questionable “Big Girl”, fell significantly below those standards.
Migos – Culture II (2018)
The initial release of “Culture” was a significant breakthrough for Migos, making them well-known across the nation and producing one hit after another. However, the second version felt hurried and overblown, failing to match up. While “Culture II” had some great tracks, they were often buried in a sea of mediocre material that’s not very enjoyable to listen to.
ScHoolboy Q – CrasH Talk (2019)
Schoolboy Q’s latest album, CrasH Talk, while not terrible, seemed like an optional addition to his discography. Upon its release, it was significantly shorter than his other works and appeared to be the least ambitious. Given his status as a rapper signed to TDE, a label known for high artistic standards, this album fell short of expectations. It seemed that Schoolboy Q wasn’t reaching his full potential with this project. It was evident he could have delivered more powerfully.
T.I. – T.I. VS T.I.P. (2007)
During the 2000s, T.I. produced a number of classics that made for an impressive run. However, among them, the album titled T.I. VS T.I.P. stood out as less impactful. The concept of the double album, showcasing two separate aspects of T.I., fell short in execution. Compared to his other work, this particular release didn’t leave a lasting impression. In retrospect, it was somewhat forgettable within the context of his illustrious career.
