Ex-Today sports presenter Alex Cullen’s desperate bid to find a tenant for the home he has a huge mortgage on – after he was sacked by Nine and forced to move to Melbourne

Recently, due to difficulty in finding tenants, Alex Cullen reduced the weekly rent for his Summer Hill luxury property from $1,800 to $1,500, bringing down its price tag to $1.9 million.

44-year-old former Today show host was let go by Network Nine earlier in the year, following his acceptance of a $50,000 bribe from Adrian Portelli for using the nickname ‘McLaren Man’ during a live broadcast.

After relocating to Melbourne, it took Alex over five weeks to find a renter for his expensive property in Sydney, but he eventually succeeded, as reported by The Daily Telegraph on Thursday.

Over several weeks, Alex had to gradually reduce the rental price for his property, which carries a high mortgage, until a tenant agreed to move in.

In 2020, a well-known media figure and his wife, Bonnie who works for Nine Entertainment, bought a spacious four-bedroom, two-bathroom house for approximately $1.9 million.

In the beginning of July, Alex placed the house up for rent, as he had recently secured a job on The Christian O’Connell Show with Melbourne’s Gold 104.3 and moved to Victoria.

In 1912, this charming Queen Anne Federation-style home was constructed and has since been meticulously preserved. It showcases timeless elements such as beautifully crafted stained glass windows, intricate ceiling decorations, and elegant archways.

Features of note are solid hardwood floors, preserved arches, ornate fireplaces, and a spacious balcony wrapping around the house.

Additionally, you’ll find a contemporary, fully equipped kitchen, along with a spacious backyard featuring a paved terrace perfect for outdoor meals.

After Alex shared with Stellar magazine that he received an offer from 7News following his dismissal by Nine, it happened next.

After the events unfolded, Seven was among the initial ones to call, expressing their solidarity and offering that if needed, they could be reached with just a phone call. This is according to what he stated.

‘I can’t tell you how much that meant to me and my family.’

He expressed enthusiasm about potentially reconnecting with some of his former work associates from the network, as he had previously been employed there for programs such as Sunrise and Sunday Night.

‘It’s not very nice being the story,’ he said, adding: ‘It’s better telling the story.’

Alex was let go from the Today show after accepting a questionable $50,000 present from the wealthy and contentious Adrian, a contender in the Block bidding process.

In January, the presenter received a substantial amount as a reward for being the first media figure to broadcast Adrian’s self-chosen moniker “McLaren Man” live on-air. This instance led him to depart from Channel Nine.

Alex’s exit from Nine was announced by Today host Karl Stefanovic live on air.

The controversy began when Adrian, feeling fed up with his frequently used nickname ‘Mr Lambo’, decided to incentivize the use of his newly adopted moniker by offering a reward. On the Today show, Alex was the first to comply with this request.

Engaging in activities such as accepting money, presents, or advantages that compromise journalistic impartiality, and exploiting a journalistic role for personal advantage, violate the journalism ethical standards set forth by the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance union, which require objectivity and integrity in reporting.

Due to an unwise action, Alex was temporarily dismissed by Network Nine, and he was absent from the show during the time they were looking into the payment issue.

As a devoted follower, I found myself witnessing an unexpected separation between Nine and Alex. However, Adrian asserted that the journalist had intended for the money to be donated to charity all along, but it seemed that plan was set aside in their parting.

Network sources informed Daily Mail Australia that the stunt might have been advantageous for both the network and Adrian, if Alex had communicated to the promoter that, given his role as a journalist, he couldn’t accept any remuneration for making the on-air comment.

At the 2022 auction for The Block, a well-known home renovation show, Adrian arrived in a bright yellow Lamborghini. This led to him being given the unsolicited nickname ‘Mr Lambo’.
