A British movie hailed as “darkly witty” is on TV tonight.
Greed” stars David Mitchell, Steve Coogan, Isla Fisher, Asa Butterfield, among others, centers around the character of Sir Richard McCreadie (portrayed by Coogan), a self-made British billionaire who finds his fashion retail empire facing hardships.
Following negative scrutiny of his business activities harming his reputation, he chooses to host a lavish, widely-advertised party on the Greek island of Mykonos to celebrate his 60th birthday as a means of improving public perception.
Additionally, notable actors such as Sarah Solemani, Ollie Locke, Sophie Cookson, and Shanina Shaik are part of this ensemble as well.
If you’re interested in catching up with the 2020 comedy, or if you’ve missed it, you have two options: You can watch it late at night on Channel 4, or stream it instantly on their on-demand service.

The movie “Greed” currently has a 50% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics generally say that while the film doesn’t pack the punch it could have, it still offers plenty of laughter and an impressive ensemble keeps this satire about the one percent engaging.
The Boston Globe’s critique of the movie stated: “Winterbottom’s film, as a form of satire, is wide-reaching, bustling, and lacks focus. As a social statement, it provokes a strong desire to hand over all the wealth to be devoured by lions.
The Observer found the production to be both boisterously enjoyable and coarse, while The Globe and Mail, in a similar vein, commented that, much like Gordon Gekko’s mantra, “Greed is good.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the film is quite amusing and generally entertaining. If you are familiar with Steve Coogan, the British comedic actor, you’ll have a head start in appreciating the main appeal of this movie.
The Wrap” complimented Coogan for his exceptional ability to deliver darkly humorous and awkward insults, describing it as watching a professional athlete at their peak. However, they regretted that the director’s aspirations for the movie ‘Greed’ were not higher, as it could have been a more exhilarating and genuinely terrifying portrayal of unrepentant greed.

In an episode of “Little Gold Men” on “Vanity Fair’s” podcast, filmmaker Michael Winterbottom shared his motivations for creating the character played by Steve Coogan in the movie “Greed”.
In Steve’s role, he portrays a character named Sir Richard McCreadie, a fictional fashion retail mogul. Interestingly, this character is inspired by a real-life individual based in Britain, Philip Green, who is well-known for his ownership of brands such as Topshop and often referred to as the “King of the High Street.
One of his businesses suffered bankruptcy, leading to intense scrutiny of its operations. This sparked our curiosity to explore economic disparities more broadly, with a focus on income inequality within the global fashion retail industry.
Given its vast scale, the clothing industry supports tens of millions of workers worldwide, a majority of whom are women. In places such as Sri Lanka, where our filming took place, these women typically earn around four pounds per day. The individuals at the helm of these fashion brands, however, are exceptionally wealthy.”
This version aims to maintain the original’s sentiment while using clearer and more conversational language that a wider audience can understand easily.
Greed will be broadcast on Channel 4 tonight at midnight. You can already watch it on Channel 4’s streaming service.
