Upcoming Marvel Disney+ Show Was Originally a Movie

Initially, Marvel Studios planned an upcoming film instead of the Disney+ series that is now in progress, which was not initially intended to be a television show.

Which Marvel Disney+ show was originally planned as a movie?

In a recent chat with Collider, Marvel Zombies’ showrunner Bryan Andrews shared that the concept for the series was initially envisioned as a movie. However, it later transformed into a four-part series. Despite this change, Andrews emphasized that the cinematic essence remains throughout the series, making it seem more like a four-episode special event.

Andrews expressed that initially, the plan was to release the project as a movie. However, some obstacles arose and necessary adjustments were made. As a result, the story has been divided into four episodes, making it more of a mini-series, or a film split into four parts. Essentially, it remains one continuous narrative with plenty of exciting events unfolding throughout.

In an alternate world, Marvel Zombies retells the story of the Marvel Universe, now a world where heroes are pitted against a rapidly spreading zombie outbreak. The voices of familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe will return in this production: Awkwafina (Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings) as Katey, David Harbour (Thunderbolts*) portraying Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and the Legend of Ten Rings) reprising his role as Shang-Chi, Elizabeth Olsen (WandaVision) stepping into the role of Scarlet Witch, Randall Park (WandaVision) playing Jimmy Woo, Florence Pugh (Thunderbolts*) taking on Yelena Belova, Hailee Steinfeld (Hawkeye) as Kate Bishop, Dominique Thorne (Ironheart) as Riri Williams, and Iman Vellani (The Marvels) portraying Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. Hudson Thames (What If…?) will voice the Spider-Man character in this series.

*These characters have not yet appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but are set to appear in upcoming films or shows.

As a follower, I’m thrilled to share that I’m part of a project helmed by Bryan Andrews, who not only directs but also co-writes the screenplay along with Zeb Wells. In his role as an executive producer, Zeb contributes significantly to our work. This series is deeply rooted in the fifth episode of Season 1 from What If…?, where the Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) and Avengers: Infinity War (2018) narratives take a dramatic turn into a zombie apocalypse. In a recent press release, Bryan hinted at some “hardcore” and “wildly unique” zombie scenes that will set our show apart from What If…? I can’t wait for you to witness it!

Marvel Zombies is set to release on Disney+ on September 24, 2025.
