Prepare yourself for an unprecedented experience as you encounter Emma Thompson in a way you’ve never experienced her before, in the chilling Minnesota-based thriller titled “The Dead of Winter“.
The movie, directed by Brian Kirk (known for his work on ‘Game of Thrones’), features Thompson portraying Barb, a grieving widow embarking on a journey across snowy Minnesota’s north to honor her late husband’s remains with an ash scattering ceremony.
While mourning outside in the snowfall, the main character encounters a distressing scene: a girl named Laurel Marsden is being forcibly taken away by a man, identified as Marc Menchaca.
Drawing upon the spirit of Marge Gunderson from Fargo, Barb feels compelled not to ignore the situation. She resolves to pursue them, understanding that the girl’s fate rests with her decisions.

As I tread cautiously towards Menchaca’s woodcutter character, standing before a striking patch of crimson-red, I feign interest in finding the nearby lake. Prepare yourself for Thompson’s spot-on portrayal of his unique Minnesota twang!
In this rephrased version, Barb’s exploration triggers a response from the man and his unnerving spouse, portrayed unexpectedly by Judy Greer, since they have a captive teenager confined below in their cellar.

The main character manages to convey a message to the child by writing on the misty basement window, assuring her that he won’t abandon her.
Based on the intense sequence that unfolds, it appears that Barb is not just hunkering down but is prepared to fiercely resist, employing whatever tools are at her disposal, such as her gun or even a hammer, to protect both herself and the girl.

Although the intense violence and atmosphere recall the movie “Fargo,” The Dead of Winter lacks the distinctive dark humor typically associated with the Coen brothers’ work. Instead, The Dead of Winter is a more serious production set to hit theaters on September 26.
Last week’s Locarno Film Festival saw the movie receive favorable critiques. According to _The Guardian_, it offers a dose of heart-pounding suspense.
Completing the ensemble are Gaia Wise, daughter of Thompson and her husband Greg Wise, as well as Cúán Hosty-Blaney who portrays the younger counterparts of Barb and her spouse Karl.
The Dead of Winter will be released in cinemas on 26 September.
