Adam Christopher’s next Star Wars book won’t be like every other Darth Vader story

Upon learning that Random House Worlds was releasing a new book by Adam Christopher titled “ Master of Evil” this year, some were initially reluctant to rejoice over another Darth Vader story. After all, he’s an intriguing character, but isn’t there already an abundance of stories about him spanning the past five decades?

It’s important to acknowledge that Star Wars books offer a unique perspective within the franchise, providing more in-depth information about the universe, characters, happenings, and locales. A book focusing on Darth Vader might initially appear redundant, but these preconceived notions can often lead astray.

How much Darth Vader is too much?

Independent of your feelings towards Darth Vader or your viewpoint on the need for additional stories about him, it’s hard to overlook his significance in popular culture lore. His villainy is so renowned that when you bring up his name in a random gathering, most individuals will likely be familiar with him, even if they haven’t watched Star Wars.

Revisiting the idea of featuring Darth Vader as the lead character in another Star Wars narrative may not solely be justified by his unique artificial breathing sound, recognizable helmet shape, or deep voice. Instead, a deeper exploration is needed to understand the richness of his character beyond being merely a symbol of power or a warning against embracing destructive emotions like anger and hate.

In actuality, Darth Vader, once known as Anakin Skywalker, embodies more than just fear and intimidation. He carries within him a heavy burden of sorrow, torment, and remorse. He is a character driven by thirst for knowledge and a desperate longing to alter what he cannot influence.

Master of Evil and Vader’s harrowing quest

Christopher’s forthcoming novel, titled “Master of Evil“, is set during a specific moment within Charles Soule’s 2017 Darth Vader comic book series. This period falls between the happenings of “Revenge of the Sith” and “A New Hope“. In this story, Darth Vader is on a mission under the watchful eye of Emperor Palpatine, where he endeavors to uncover deeper insights about the Force and its influence on “the mysteries of life and death”, as suggested by the official book description on Penguin Random House’s website.

As a dedicated fan, I must confess that while we’ve witnessed Darth Vader’s quest to reclaim lost love across various tales spanning the Star Wars universe, it’s been some time since we delved into his life immediately following his transformation in ‘Sith’. This upcoming novel presents an unprecedented narrative – a frantic pursuit driven by a man questioning the veracity of a vision he harbors doubts about.

Over the past decade or so, Vader has been notably absent from many Star Wars novels. Yet, here we are, eagerly anticipating a novel penned by a storyteller known for their exceptional skill and dedication to their craft.

The future of Vader in Star Wars canon

Over the past decade, some memorable instances of Darth Vader include appearances in TV series like Star Wars Rebels and Obi-Wan Kenobi, where he might not always be the leading character but still leaves an indelible mark on both the narrative and the characters.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I must admit that Darth Vader, a character as legendary as they come, truly shines when his appearances are deliberate yet potent across the Star Wars universe. The more frequent he becomes, the more his impact seems to dwindle. Recently, we’ve been treated to numerous compelling tales centered around Vader, with many more on the horizon. By employing him tactically, Vader transcends being merely an imposing physical presence and becomes a powerful metaphorical character instead.

Star Wars: Master of Evil by Adam Christopher releases on November 11, 2025.
