Sydney Sweeney breaks social media silence with first post since American Eagle controversy

Sydney Sweeney recently posted on Instagram for the first time since her latest American Eagle ad campaign stirred up worldwide controversy, ending a brief hiatus from social media.

For several weeks, the 27-year-old actress found herself at the center of media attention due to her involvement in a divisive advertisement that sparked an intense debate online. However, instead of commenting on the controversy, she decided to remain silent.

Rather than offering a defense or an apology, the actress from Euphoria took to Instagram to advertise her forthcoming movie, Americana, which is due for release in cinemas on August 15, 2025.

A while back, I made a small film with a group of friends, and now you have the opportunity to meet Penny Jo. This is indicated by a collection of photos showing what happened during the filming.

The first photo showed the two-time Emmy nominee gazing ahead from the driver’s seat of a car.

Another set of images showed her beaming inside a trailer, capturing a mirror selfie with a vintage camera while donning a wavy blonde wig and playing the guitar in her cozy room.

Another shot captured her co-star, Halsey, flashing the rock-and-roll hand sign.

Last month, Sweeney found himself at the heart of a heated discussion concerning race, advertising strategies, and responsibility, following his appointment as the model for American Eagle’s autumn denim ad campaign.

The slogan for the advertisement, ‘Sydney Sweeney has fantastic jeans,’ caused some disagreement among consumers as it was intentionally similar to the phrase ‘great genetics.’

In this rephrased version, the viral video displays Sweeney positioned before a sign that originally read, “Sydney Sweeney has great genes.” However, the phrase “genes” was altered to say “jeans” in the revised version of the poster.

The viral clip features a poster initially saying “Sydney Sweeney has great genes,” but in an updated edition, it now reads “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.

The video features Sweeney stating, ‘Genes inherited from parents can influence characteristics such as hair color, personality, and even eye color,’ as the camera focuses on her blue eyes. Later, she humorously remarks, ‘And my pants are blue too.’

The humorous language used in the campaign was meant to be light-hearted and striking, but it sparked concerns on social media about promoting racial undertones, eugenics, and white supremacy. This was mainly because of the emphasis on genetics combined with Sweeney’s image featuring blue eyes.

American Eagle clarified on August 1st that their statement “‘Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans'” has been and continues to be focused on the jeans, not Sydney Sweeney herself.

As a lifestyle connoisseur, I’d like to emphasize that every individual’s unique style is beautifully reflected in their Levi’s (AE jeans). Our mission remains to honor and celebrate the self-assurance and personal flair with which each person dons their jeans. After all, exceptional denim should be universally appealing.
