Newcastle United’s Magpie Emblem Inspires a New Exhibition

In March, Newcastle United secured the Carabao Cup, their first domestic cup victory in seven decades. Over five months later, the celebration continues as the team organized a special art exhibition in Seoul, South Korea.

During its tour in Asia, the free-to-access exhibition was designed to offer fans a more intimate glimpse into Newcastle United’s past by showcasing archival photos and posters. In addition, it featured exclusive pieces from Joonho Ko, a local artist renowned for his dark editorial cartoons and colorful animations, which were especially commissioned for this event.

Through a fusion of Korean cultural traditions and football fervor, Ko creatively reinterprets the club’s magpie symbol by drawing inspiration from ancient folklore, where the bird is seen as a bringer of good fortune and wealth. In his illustrations, such as “Winter Momentum” and “Back at the Nest”, the magpie is depicted in the foreground, commemorating significant matches. On the other hand, artworks like “Home Advantage” portray groups of birds flying behind esteemed players.

In late this month, when the club comes back to Newcastle, the exhibition will be accessible to the public at the Baltic Center for Contemporary Art, featuring a blend of mixed-media artworks from Ewen Spencer and Jimmy Turrell. Additionally, soccer enthusiasts attending will have an opportunity to view the Carabao Cup and even witness the victory parade on a bus.
