The film features Jay Lycurgo in the role of Shy, a troubled teenager who was the focus of the book, alongside Emily Watson (reuniting with Murphy from “Small Things Like These”), Tracey Ullman, Roger Allam, and Simbi Ajikawo.

In advance of its Netflix debut, the film titled “Steve” is set to have its world premiere at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. There, festival programmer Jason Ryle commended it as a “compelling adaptation” of the work “Shy“.

As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “Me, in an eerie yet captivating portrayal, holds down an exceptional ensemble. Jay Lycurgo knocks it out of the park as Shy, a character grappling with the turbulent tides of his own psyche, wrestling between despair and the slightest glimmer of hope.

Steve represents a battered tribute to organizations facing adversity, while simultaneously exploring the resilience of individuals within these structures. This drama, filled with determination, portrays a closed-door setting, featuring misplaced innocence and tenacious gestures of optimism.

Additionally, Murphy collaborated with Alan Moloney on the creation of “Steve“, which served as their inaugural venture under their production company, Big Things Films.

Previously, Max handed me an unfinished proof copy of that book, which left me emotional. It’s the kind of material I adore as both a reader and a performer, so I was eager to collaborate with him on something.

Steve will be released in select cinemas on 19 September and on Netflix on Friday 3 October.
