Weapons Director Reveals Key Detail About His Resident Evil Movie Characters

Excited fans are counting down the days until the new Resident Evil movie, and Zach Cregger, the film’s director, recently gave an exciting update about the main characters in his horror reboot. In a recent interview, the weapons director revealed that the upcoming film will present an entirely original story, with no characters from the Capcom games appearing on the big screen.

Zach Cregger says he’s ‘not going to tell Leon’s story’ in new Resident Evil film

During a conversation with Inverse, Zach Cregger explained that while his Resident Evil reboot will draw upon the game’s extensive backstory, the movie’s storyline won’t be directly tied to the characters from the games. He stressed that the film won’t focus on the adventures of Leon Scott Kennedy, who has featured in 11 Resident Evil games up until now, including two remakes.

The Weapons director clarified that the games follow their own rules, and he won’t be retelling Leon’s story because it has already been depicted in the games for fans to enjoy. In simpler terms, he emphasized that the games themselves stick to a certain code and since Leon’s tale is already part of those games, there’s no need for him to re-create it again.

Cregger justified his choice to exclude original Resident Evil game characters from his movie by stating, “I’m not violating the rules of the games. As a die-hard fan, I’m crafting a narrative that is a tribute to the games and adheres to their established rules.

Later, he gave a straightforward response to fans who were anticipating Leon’s role in the latest Resident Evil movie, saying, “You can enjoy the game instead.” Cregger had earlier mentioned that he is prepared for criticism from viewers following the film’s release, regardless of its quality. Yet, he remains optimistic that fans will appreciate the finished product.

The new Resident Evil film is currently on track to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
