Shrek 5 release date is delayed until 2027 as fans say they all ‘know why’

The release of Shrek 5 has been delayed until summer 2027.

The forthcoming DreamWorks film, which received criticism from fans upon its teaser release, has been delayed by six months and is now scheduled for a June 30, 2027 premiere instead of the initial December 23, 2026 date.

Upon learning about the news initially shared by Varity, fans expressed their thoughts online, suggesting they understand why the recent addition of the popular series has faced a delay.

Instagram user @taco_chacos pointed out the reason, saying ‘We’re all aware of it,’ while @solomon_br0 requested, ‘Could you please improve that animation?’

Attentive spectators pointed out alterations to Shrek’s appearance earlier this year, as they spotted differences made by the studio.

They claimed that the main character was given cosmetic procedures such as a nose job, lip augmentation, cheek enhancements, and a jaw reshaping, along with other modifications.

Another person reacted, ‘Good! Hope that means they’re fixing the animation and writing.’

Someone else addd confidently: ‘They’re changing the character design, we all know that.’

‘Hopefully this means they’re changing the character design,’ another moviegoer echoed.

And @zenskittles contributed, ‘Still time to change the character designs,’ with crossed fingers.

Emily Jeffri expressed her hope that the delay would enable the animation to bear some resemblance to the earlier films.

Others urged the studio to take its time while making adjustments to the project.

‘Take your time DreamWorks. Take your time,’ @maxhechtman advised.

@adamcanterbury94 shared a GIF that read: ‘That’s okay, I’ll wait!!’

According to Variety, the studio didn’t explain why there was a delay, but Deadline suggests that the summer might be a more suitable time for the premiere.

It’s the second delay for the film, which was originally slated for a July 2026 release.

The upcoming Shrek movie marks the first installment of the primary series since Shrek Forever After, which came out in 2010. In this new film, Zendaya is joining the cast, portraying the role of Shrek’s daughter, Felicia.

In the upcoming sequel, Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz will reprise their roles by providing the voices for Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona again.

As a devoted fan, I’m excited to share that Eddie hinted at Shrek 5 maintaining its trademark humor, much like its predecessors have done before.

In an interview with Extra in June, the 64-year-old actor shared that he’s recorded some humorous material for the Shrek films. He explained that unlike a traditional script, they only receive dialogue for each recording session and he believes he’s created some laugh-out-loud moments.

Eddie mentioned that he won’t have a chance to meet his fellow actors until the movie premiere, since he did all his voice recordings for the film on his own.

In simpler terms, he suggested that after the movie concludes or is released, we should meet up at its premiere, yet during the movie itself, we won’t have scenes together.

‘It’s all just you by yourself and a microphone.’

In a recent disclosure, it was made known that Donkey will star in a solo movie, with filming set to start in September.

According to ScreenRant’s interview with him in July, he stated that although work on the animation for Shrek 5 isn’t currently being done, the team is still busy recording voiceovers. In essence, they are still actively working on Shrek-related projects.

Our work on the new Donkey film begins in September, marking our first project dedicated to Donkey. This will be three years away, while we are currently around two years into producing Shrek 5. Right now, we’re still recording voices for Donkey, and we’re set to start production in September.

Eddie Murphy, known for his role in Beverly Hills Cop, announced that Donkey would star in his own movie, similar to how Antonio Banderas’ character Puss in Boots had a solo film. The upcoming movie promises to delve into Donkey’s personal journey and relationships, particularly focusing on him and his dragon wife.

‘They’ve written this funny story. We’re doing that, starting that in September,’ he reiterated.

In 2023, Chris Meledandri, founder of Illumination, first brought up the possibility of a fifth Shrek film, expressing his optimism about getting the original actors back together for the project.

As a die-hard admirer, I’m ecstatically thrilled to share some exciting news! In a recent conversation with Variety, our film producer hinted at the possibility of our beloved cast rejoining for another spectacular journey. The talks are already underway, and the buzz is palpable! It seems that our actors are just as passionate about returning as we fans are eager to see them back on screen. Here’s to hoping for more unforgettable moments ahead!
