Blue Peter icon Biddy Baxter has died at the age of 92. 

It was shared on Monday through a statement that Biddy Baxter, a long-standing editor for Blue Peter, passed away at the age of 92. We regret to inform you about this sad news.

We honor a genuine trailblazer, whose journey through the evolving landscape of television was marked by intuition, determination, and flair.

No cause of death has been given.

Biddy is known as a committed, enthusiastic, and trailblazing figure in children’s programming, having spent 26 years working on the legendary BBC show, Blue Peter.

In simpler terms, the media professional was considered very influential and in command, while other female professionals in her field had less impact on their positions.

For a span of 26 years, from 1962 to her retirement in 1988, Biddy served as editor for the twice-weekly magazine show known as Blue Peter. This program has been variously enjoyed, imitated, discussed, ridiculed, criticized, and admired, as noted by Richard Marson in his book “Biddy Baxter: The Woman Who Made Blue Peter.

The long-running children’s TV show, Blue Peter, continues to offer a diverse blend of segments including animal and pet features, contests, charity fundraisers, international travel insights, cooking tutorials, gymnastics performances, and history lectures.

In that context, Biddy held a significant position of authority, and her viewpoints and priorities dominated. She exerted remarkable influence and command, a rarity among women in the public sphere during a period when they rarely held substantial influence.

Her outlook was, ‘I didn’t understand why girls couldn’t do everything,’ and Biddy’s way of living has consistently been briskly pragmatic: ‘Just move ahead and accomplish what you can, don’t waste time on what you can’t.’

Colleagues perceived her as stern and intimidating, reminiscent of a school principal who could be as fear-inducing as the Daleks, the wicked witch from Snow White, or a more unnerving version of Miss Marple.

Biddy had an instinct for finding good, clear ideas which worked for the pre-pubescent audience.

She had no hesitation, for example, in turning down an appearance by Paul McCartney.

In another instance, Biddy made news when Yvette Fielding, a previous host of Blue Peter, shared that she was terrified and uncontrollably trembling following a harsh reprimand from their superior.

Born in Leicester in 1933, Biddy was the sole offspring of parents who were unique in their own ways – her mother was deaf, while her father ran a textile company as its director.

Initially named Joan, she soon acquired the nickname “Biddy” due to a large number of other students sharing the same name at her school.

She attended a grammar school, participated in local theater productions alongside Joe Orton, and earned her degree from Durham University with third-class honors.

In 1955, rather than pursuing a career as a probation officer or psychiatric social worker, Biddy unexpectedly chose to work at the BBC as a trainee studio manager, where she innovatively produced sound effects, like using coconut shells to mimic the sound of horses’ hooves.

Back then, kids’ TV shows weren’t particularly respected, but Biddy managed to make a name for herself by creating puppet movies, studying storyboards, and even proposing the establishment of the Correspondence Unit, which responded to letters from children and distributed Blue Peter badges.

Biddy’s private life was kept under wraps. 

Scant information is available regarding her personal background. In the year 2000, she wed her lifelong companion, John Hosier – the principal of the Guildhall School of Music and Dance – who was nearing the end of his life at that time.

Biddy had been away from her father for a long time. She didn’t have any biological children, but in a sense, she nurtured countless others – and I am fortunate to have been among them.
