Wildgate (PlayStation, Xbox, PC, £24.99)
Verdict: Marvellous mash-up
Wildgate is here – and wild is a good word for it.
Instead of being merely a first-person shooter, this cartoony game places you in the role of a space explorer, tasked with discovering artifacts scattered across the far corners of the universe.
To locate them and return to your spaceship, you’ll need to carry out various activities such as scanning, mining for resources, and even maintaining the spacecraft itself.
I’m glad to inform you that assistance is at hand: a team of prospectors, comprising fellow Wildgate players found online, are here to help. However, be aware that there are competitors as well: other teams aiming to grab the artifacts for themselves. This is where the need for shooting comes into play.

The constituent elements of Wildgate aren’t entirely novel. Its vibrant prospectors, each possessing unique skills spanning from teleportation to hull-destruction, bear resemblance to online shooters akin to Overwatch. Its teamwork in spacecraft navigation mirrors the nautical counterpart found in Sea of Thieves set in outer space.
However, the mix of these elements is quite uncommon – and surprisingly enjoyable. I found myself unable to resist continuously engaging with this intriguing medley.
You might find yourself drawn to experimenting with various prospectors and ship enhancements, including the powerful sniper cannon, to see what works best.

One potential way to rephrase this is: Beyond the risk of being paired with an unproductive group of odd individuals, the challenge lies in that the available options are limited and tend to deplete fast. At present, Wildgate possesses only a few prospectors, weapons, spaceships, and maps. The scope of its universe is significantly smaller than its aspirations.
It’s likely that these issues will be resolved as the game is updated in the future. Fingers crossed! There’s a fortune to be found among those celestial bodies.
