Recently, the head of the Senate’s Committee on Games and Amusements in the Philippines announced plans for public discussions about the future of internet-based gambling within the country. This announcement comes as concerns over the ethical and moral implications of casinos have grown, along with a call from the church to prohibit all online gambling entirely.
As a fervent supporter, I’m thrilled to share that within mere days, our very own Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has unveiled its intention to introduce stricter regulations for online gambling transactions. This move is aimed at enhancing consumer protection in the digital gaming landscape, ensuring a safer and more secure experience for all of us Filipino enthusiasts.
Philippines’ online gambling gets new restrictions amidst talks of a ban
On August 7, 2025, according to reports by The Inquirer, the Bank of the Philippines Islands (BSP) announced plans to implement new rules aimed at enhancing secure online gambling transactions within the country. These regulations were formulated following extensive consultations with the public, with the primary goal of safeguarding players from potential risks in online gambling.
Under the latest rules, you’ll find enhanced security measures for verifying identities, including biometrics and face scans. Furthermore, gamers should anticipate daily spending limits and temporal constraints on gambling transactions.
The new rules also require providers to offer user controls like spending limits, temporary account suspensions, and so on, in an effort to minimize gambling addiction risks or alleviate their impacts.
It won’t be shocking to find that these latest changes are taking place, considering that the BSP has already made it clear in the past about their intentions to set limits on daily transactions for online gambling activities.
The Philippine administration is actively implementing stricter rules for online gambling to maintain financial honesty, minimize addictions, and ensure safety. A recent illustration of this is the prohibition of online gambling platforms and VPN usage on work internet networks in Cebu City during the past month.
Although some groups like the church and senate are pushing for an outright prohibition of internet-based gaming, it appears that the Philippine government’s efforts are centered more on implementing additional restrictions rather than a total ban. The Department of Finance (DOF) is also taking steps to strengthen regulations by raising fees and taxes in the online gambling sector.
