2015’s film, helmed and penned by Andrew Haigh, derives its inspiration from a brief narrative titled “In Another Country” by David Constantine.

The film titled “45 Years” boasts an almost flawless rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, with The Guardian describing it as “a poignant and captivating drama showcasing two seasoned performers delivering a lifetime’s worth of insight and skill in their acting.

The Toronto Sun implies that the movie is incredibly impactful, describing it as one that could leave you broken. They further note that the film moves at a leisurely pace without many significant events, yet manages to be devastating.

The “Movie Freak” labeled it as “an immediate timeless masterpiece” and “a grand drama that will undoubtedly be admired for decades,” on the other hand, the “Rolling Stone” comments that the movie “has an enchanting allure.

Haigh, the director behind both the 2011 film “Weekend” and the HBO series “Looking,” later unveiled the critically acclaimed movie “All of Us Strangers” in 2023. During this time, he shared insights with Digital Spy about the common theme linking it to his previous works like “45 Years.

He elaborated, “As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, time feels distinct to me. The path my life takes is unique, deviating from traditional milestones that others may follow. While this is changing, I believe the journey for younger queer individuals can be somewhat separate.

It seems that my personal nature causes me to view time uniquely, making it intriguing for me to explore the concept of time, hence my fascination.

Regardless if it’s ‘Weekend,’ exploring a slice of someone’s life spanning 48 hours, or ’45 Years,’ where a past event returns to disrupt the current moment, my fascination lies in understanding the complexities of time itself.

45 Years is streaming now on Channel 4.

The latest print issue from Digital Spy, titled “Oasis – Live in ’25,” is now available! You can purchase it at your local newsstands or online for only £8.99.
