Unpacking Anakin’s role in Ahsoka Season 2: Why it’s more than fan service

Enthusiasts of Snips and Skyguy are excited about Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka Season 2, but it seems that creator Dave Filoni may have more in store for the Skywalker character than just catering to fan wishes. Lately, Hayden Christensen has had to cancel several fan events, and an account focused on the actor hinted at his unavailability to join Ian McDiarmid in late October.

A supporter recently disclosed that they learned from Spacecon San Antonio that Hayden has been booked for filming on Ahsoka up until October, indicating that the series’ production could last at least half a year. This is noteworthy because filming began straight after Star Wars Celebration in Japan, so if it carries on till October, it suggests an extended timeline for wrapping up this season’s production.

Additionally, it’s been revealed that Hayden had to skip a convention in July due to “night shoots” commitments. It seems that Rosario Dawson, who plays Ahsoka in the series, has been occupied with the second season of the show for the upcoming months at least. While we can’t say exactly how much filming she’ll be doing, it’s reasonable to assume that she might have a larger role in the next season.

In the second season of Ahsoka, some might argue that the extensive involvement of Christensen is merely fan service. However, I’m starting to suspect there’s a more substantial reason for Anakin Skywalker’s former Master to be present. The upcoming season seems poised to delve into untouched areas of Star Wars lore in live-action. The closing moments of the first season hint at crucial developments, such as Baylan Skoll on the statue of the Mortis Gods, a convor on Peridea, and the last shot being Anakin Skywalker’s Force-ghost.

If you’re a fan of “The Clone Wars,” you might find it easier to understand what appears to be hinted at here. In Season 3, specifically episodes “Overlords,” “Altar of Mortis,” and “Ghosts of Mortis,” the nature of Anakin Skywalker being ‘The Chosen One’ was delved into. We saw how powerful Anakin truly was when he transferred the Daughter’s life force into Ahsoka Tano’s lifeless body. He managed to save his apprentice, but ‘The Father’ offered him a permanent position on Mortis, asking him to stay and maintain balance in the Force.

As a devoted admirer, let me rephrase it this way: In the divine realm, ‘The Son’ and ‘The Daughter’ symbolize the light and dark aspects of the Force. My beloved character, Anakin, was informed by The Father that he was past his prime and the responsibility would shift to him. Yet, against all advice, Anakin rejected staying on this path and opted for a destiny that ultimately led to his descent. However, in season 2 of ‘Ahsoka’, there’s a possibility that Anakin will be granted another opportunity to assume The Father’s role as the guardian of balance in the universe.

If Anakin is portrayed as “The Father”, it’s possible that season 2 might delve back into Ahsoka’s bond with “The Daughter”. For many years, a female creature named Morai, originating from Mortis, has been following Ahsoka. She has made appearances in significant episodes such as ‘The Mandalorian’, Chapter 13, ‘The Jedi’, and ‘Ahsoka’. Fans speculate that Ahsoka could be “The Daughter”, which implies she represents the light side of the Force. The roles of ‘The Father’ (Anakin) and ‘The Daughter’ (Ahsoka) strengthen their teacher-student connection even more.

One theory suggests that Anakin played a significant role in Ahsoka’s storyline during Season 2. If this proves to be correct, Dave Filoni would not be accused of catering to fans. The Mortis arc is one of the most memorable arcs from The Clone Wars and left many unanswered questions that Ahsoka might address. My hope is that Dave Filoni ensures this season consists of at least 10 episodes, as characters like Ezra Bridger, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Hera Syndulla, and Garazeb Orrelios deserve more screen time than they received in the previous season, alongside Ahsoka.
