The widely praised Ireland-based drama, “Normal People,” featuring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal, has resurfaced in the popular charts after its release on Netflix.
On Sunday, the 12-part romantic drama adaptation of Sally Rooney’s 2018 novel made its debut on the streaming platform. Since then, it has been gradually moving up the popularity rankings.
According to FlixPatrol, the show ranked at number seven on the streamer’s UK TV charts on Monday and moved up to position six today. Given there are still several days in the week, there’s a chance it might ascend higher into the top 10.
The 2020 drama follows the evolving relationship of Marianne Sheridan (played by Edgar-Jones) and Connell Waldron (Mescal), spanning their teenage years through young adulthood. They encounter numerous hurdles along the way.
Under the joint direction of Lenny Abrahamson and Hettie Macdonald, the television series Normal People garnered widespread praise following its debut. It managed to secure a remarkable approval rating of 91%, based on 91 reviews, on Rotten Tomatoes.
In our critique, we stated that the story envelops you, beautifully encapsulating the profound, transcendent love shared by Marianne and Connell, which goes beyond their physical relationship. Furthermore, we noted that the actors portraying them were a flawless choice.
Empire Magazine observed that Edgar-Jones exhibits a captivating vulnerability, while Mescal (in his debut role) seems to stumble over his words prior to speaking, showing meticulous attention to the dialogue written by Rooney, which is used sparingly.
According to The Boston Globe, this is an exceptionally well-crafted series exploring themes of love, sex, and class in Ireland, boasting standout leading performances. On the other hand, KDHX advises not to miss out on this series.
Even with widespread praise and a devoted fanbase, it appears that another season may not be imminent. However, Edgar-Jones and Mescal generated some anticipation when they hinted at having “some news” to reveal last year.
The screening stretched into an endurance test for the series, causing many fans to feel let down. Yet, there was still a glimmer of optimism as Edgar-Jones urged everyone to stay hopeful about a potential continuation.
