Everything You Need to Remember About Wednesday Before Season 2

At long last, woe is no longer us now that Wednesday Season 2 is finally here.

After a break of almost three years, the widely beloved Addams Family spinoff on Netflix is coming back for its second season, which fans have been eagerly waiting for. The series will once again feature Jenna Ortega’s dark-themed protagonist in Nevermore Academy, where she’ll continue her journey of adventures among outcasts, dealing with family issues, and unraveling supernatural puzzles for another school year.

On its premiere in November 2022, Season 1 of the show “Wednesday” became Netflix’s English-language TV series with the highest number of hours watched in a week, garnering an astounding 341.23 million hours viewed within its first seven days on the streaming platform. Its creators, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (known for “Smallville” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”), are optimistic that Season 2 will continue this success, with Part 1 (Episodes 1-4) launching on August 6 and Part 2 (Episodes 5-8) following on September 3.

In Millar’s words to the Hollywood Reporter, it’s crucial for us to avoid a second-season decline, as fans’ anticipation for Season 2 is at its peak. We’ve seen many shows that we adored in their first season, only to lose interest after watching the initial episodes of the second season. Therefore, ensuring the show maintains its humor, mystery, and all other elements was our primary goal, so as not to disappoint our audience.

Here’s everything you need to know before tuning into Wednesday Season 2.

How did Wednesday Season 1 end?

Following an event involving carnivorous piranhas that led to her expulsion from a public high school at the onset of Season 1, Wednesday ended up attending Nevermore, a mystical boarding school located in Jericho, Vermont. This was the same institution her parents, Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones), had attended previously. At Nevermore, she met an assortment of other perceived outcasts such as the siren Bianca (Joy Sunday), the gorgon Ajax (Georgie Farmer), and her energetic werewolf roommate Enid (Emma Myers). It was here that Wednesday began developing her psychic talents.

Investigating the grisly slaying of telekinetic student Rowan (Calum Ross), who was killed by a mysterious monster later identified as Hyde, Wednesday and her associate Thing (Victor Dorobantu) began an inquiry to unravel the truth about Hyde’s identity, its master, and how Jericho’s troubled past intertwined with present-day crimes. In the climax, Wednesday pieced together the puzzle to discover that the Hyde was actually her pseudo-boyfriend Tyler (Hunter Doohan), the seemingly ordinary son of Jericho sheriff Donovan Galpin (Jamie McShane). However, it was revealed that Tyler was being controlled by their dorm mother and botany teacher Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci), who famously portrayed Wednesday in the beloved 1991 film ‘The Addams Family’ and its sequel ‘Addams Family Values’.

In the end, it was revealed that Marilyn Thornhill was actually Laurel Gates, a relative of Joseph Crackstone, the colonial-era founder of Jericho, who had been played by Ortega. She had staged her own death to bring back Crackstone from the dead, with the intention of having him carry out his plan to eliminate all outcasts. With assistance from Enid, Bianca, psychic bug manipulator Eugene (Moosa Mostafa), and the spirit of Goody Addams, Wednesday was able to thwart Tyler and Laurel’s schemes and finally put an end to Crackstone for good. Despite being arrested instead of killed, there’s a possibility that both Tyler and Laurel could return in Season 2 and potentially influence the storyline once more.

Millar mentioned to Netflix’s Tudum that not every detail has been fully resolved as neatly as Wednesday believes, and he’s excited about the prospect of uncovering more mysteries in the future, which she finds appealing.”

“Millar explained to Netflix’s Tudum that there are still some lingering questions that haven’t been wrapped up as nicely as Wednesday seems to think. He is intrigued by the idea of presenting a fresh mystery for her to solve.

What to expect at the start of Season 2

In the start of the second season, we learn that Wednesday must deal with the same stalker who was revealed at the end of Season 1 finale. Moreover, she will explore further into her psychic abilities since Goody is no longer her spiritual guide. This situation might potentially cause issues for our beloved protagonist known for her deadpan demeanor.

This season, more family members of the Addams Family will take on larger roles. Wednesday’s younger brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez) will attend Nevermore Academy, while Morticia and Gomez will have a stronger presence at the school. Additionally, Wednesday and Pugsley’s Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen), as well as Morticia’s estranged mother, Grandmama Hester Frump (Joanna Lumley), will be there to add to the dark humor.

In 2022, Millar expressed to TV Line that the series only scratched the surface with the Addams characters, praising the actors’ exceptional performances. He particularly highlighted Catherine Zeta-Jones as an iconic Morticia and emphasized the crucial role of the bond between Wednesday and Morticia in the show. The storyline also focuses on Wednesday’s efforts to carve her own identity separate from the family.

Significant newcomers to the ensemble are Steve Buscemi, taking on the role of Principal Barry Dort, the latest headmaster at Nevermore; Thandiwe Newton as Dr. Rachael Fairburn, the head psychiatrist at Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital where Tyler resides; and, indeed, Lady Gaga, famously known as Mother Monster, who embodies Rosaline Rotwood, a legendary teacher at Nevermore who interacts with Wednesday.

Regarding the main enigma of Season 2, a Netflix preview unveiled in May hinted that Gough and Millar aim to surpass the intrigue of Season 1. “The scope of this show knows no bounds,” Millar stated. “We allow our creativity to soar.
