Recently, I spotted Kim Kardashian in casual attire. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, making the stars feel at ease – they can even ask for salt without worrying about being recognized or having their pictures taken. It’s a refreshing change from the usual paparazzi and script pitching.’

Since 1949, the renowned diner has been catering to Hollywood celebrities, and there’s always a chance you could be enjoying a piece of apple pie alongside an unexpected star, according to the hotel’s website.
The menu features various options such as a $32 healthy eggs benedict, $32 avocado toast, a $34 Scottish salmon bagel with cream cheese, a $36 FCR Cobb salad, a $29 breakfast burrito, and a $22 banana split, among others. For those watching their budget, there’s cereal available for $9.
Freshly squeezed orange juice is $14 and a cup of coffee is $7.
It’s open seven days a week from 7am until 4pm.
The tale of The Beverly Hills Hotel seems much like a captivating folklore, as the site where this legendary hotel now resides was once an ordinary bean field.
Notable figures from the world of Hollywood, such as Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, and Rita Hayworth were regulars in this area. Similarly, Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin often frequented it as well.
This famous building along Sunset Boulevard dates back to 1912, designed by architect Elmer Grey at a cost of half a million dollars (equivalent to around thirteen million dollars in current value).
Back then, the glamorous city of Beverly Hills wasn’t on the map yet. Instead, this hotel stood majestically in open, picturesque landscapes, positioned almost equidistant between Los Angeles and the ocean. It was marketed as a captivating midpoint destination, drawing visitors from far and wide.
Two years following the hotel’s opening, Beverly Hills officially became a city. By the 1920s, it had established itself as one of the most prestigious locations globally.
The hotel earned a reputation for catering to its renowned visitors by providing them with a comfortable environment and respecting their need for seclusion. Pioneering figures in the early cinema world, like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, were among the initial distinguished guests who utilized the hotel as a filming location.
By the 1940s, ownership of the hotel passed from previous holders to Hernando Courtright, who held a position as Vice President at Bank of America.
He changed the name of El Jardin Restaurant to The Polo Lounge, as a tribute to a famous group of polo players who would celebrate their match victories there, amidst the bean fields.
By the close of the decade, our hotel underwent a significant renovation, and in the year 1947, we unveiled two significant additions: the Crystal Room and the Lanai Restaurant. Over time, the latter was rechristened as The Coterie.
The hotel stands out with its distinctive pink facade, a color introduced back in 1948 to harmonize with Los Angeles’ iconic sunsets and the fashionable country club aesthetic prevalent then.
That same year, they added the Crescent Wing to the establishment, a fitting tribute to its position along Crescent Drive. Notably, the hotel’s name is displayed in large letters on one of its external walls, making it one of the most frequently captured scenes in photographs.
Around the mid-1950s, Detroit’s prominent property tycoon, Ben Silberstein, acquired the hotel for approximately $5.5 million. The hotel’s allure among nobility and famous personalities further flourished.
The latest attendees were the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Princess Margaret along with Lord Snowdon, King Albert from Belgium, the Prince of Monaco, and actors John Wayne and Henry Fonda.
In the 1940s, the stylishly androgynous Marlene Dietrich successfully persuaded the Polo Lounge restaurant within a hotel to modify its rule against women wearing trousers (slacks).
1956 saw the hotel’s swimming pool and Cabana Club serving as scenic settings for Gregory Peck and Lauren Bacall in Designing Women. Meanwhile, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and the rest of the Rat Pack indulged in boisterous drinking sprees at the Polo Lounge.
Liz Taylor spent her honeymoons at the hotel’s luxurious bungalows with six of her spouses, including Richard Burton. Among these, Bungalow Five held a special place as one of their preferred spots.
For nearly three decades, the recluse billionaire, Howard Hughes, frequently resided within the bungalows, yet starting from 1942, his Cadillac remained stationed in front of the hotel for such an extended period that flora even sprouted from the vehicle.
He also had hotel staff leave late-night meals, including roast beef sandwiches, in a nearby tree.
In the year 1960, Marilyn Monroe resided in bungalows numbered 20 and 21, while it was rumored that she was involved in a romantic liaison with her co-star from “Let’s Make Love,” Yves Montand.
John Lennon and Yoko Ono stayed in bed for a week in another bungalow in the 1970s.
The Beverly Hills Hotel went through several ownership changes in the 1980s.
In 1986, the Boeskys acquired ownership worth $100 million, and by the end of the same year, they sold the property to Denver-based oil tycoon Marvin Davis for a price of $136 million.
In 1987, Davis transferred ownership of the hotel to the current proprietor, the Dorchester Collection, a company managed by the Sultan of Brunei.
The link has stirred up controversy following Brunei’s implementation of their interpretation of Islamic laws (sharia), which now imposes capital punishment for crimes such as homosexual acts, adultery, and rape – even to the extent of using stoning as a method.
As an ardent supporter, I played a role in the worldwide outcry that prompted a Southeast Asian nation to expand its temporary halt on capital punishment to their legislative proceedings.
The hotel ceased operation on December 30, 1992, for a full renovation that took approximately 2.5 years to complete.
The hotel reopened on June 3, 1995, with upgrades and custom-designed furniture and fittings.
In 2016, the hotel embarked on a historical renovation project for its bungalows, which was carried out in stages from 2016 to 2018, with each of the total 23 bungalows receiving work during this period.
