Reboot of classic ’80s action series just landed a new UK streaming home

In the UK, the action-adventure series starring Lucas Till and Tristin Mays as MacGyver, has secured a new platform for streaming.

This revamped television show, originally aired from 1985 to 1992, chronicles the adventures of Angus ‘Mac’ MacGyver (portrayed by Till), an undercover government operative who excels in finding creative solutions to complex problems.

Debuting in 2016, the re-imagined show ran for five seasons and a total of 94 episodes before its termination in 2021. However, it has now found a new platform in the UK, with all episodes available there until June 2027. Conveniently, there’s still ample opportunity to watch this series during its stay.

Besides Till and Mays, the cast of MacGyver also features George Eads, Sandrine Holt, Justin Hires, and Meredith Eaton. The series was developed, runs, and is overseen by Peter M Lenkov in his roles as developer, showrunner, and executive producer.

Although the show spanned nearly 100 episodes, it garnered a blend of positive and negative feedback during its broadcast. At the moment, its IMDb user rating is 5.5 out of 10 based on 24,000 reviews.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my feelings about this modern take. It’s missing the enchanting whimsy and delightful wit that made the original so endearing to me. Instead, it seems overly grim and serious, which is quite a departure from the spirit I cherished. To me, it feels less like a reboot and more like an entirely new concept.

One viewer commented that the replica lacked the same level of suspense, memorability, and intelligence as the original, bordering on being a satire. Another viewer described it as repetitive and dull, attributing this to its poor quality in terms of writing.

There were additional favorable assessments, with one spectator labeling it “underestimated” and “enjoyable.” They commented that it’s “better than what the reviews suggest.” It’s an amusing, cool, and silly action series. Watching it is enjoyable.

As a fan myself, I’ve got to say that Lucas Till carries the MacGyver legacy exceptionally well, making him a perfect fit for the role. While I hold the original series with Richard Dean Anderson in high regard, this updated version has won me over completely!

If you prefer medical dramas over action thrillers, then perhaps 5 could pique your interest with all six seasons and 107 episodes of “The Resident”. This show aired from 2018 to 2023 and has been quite popular recently on the streaming platform.

MacGyver is streaming now on 5.
