The Chase star Mark Labbett apologises for his ‘bursts of anger’ on Celebs Go Dating – as quizzer admits he ‘got quite grumpy on set’

Mark Labbett from The Chase has expressed his regrets over moments of irritability he displayed during his search for romance on Celebs Go Dating.

The experienced trivia expert, aged 59, acknowledged that the shooting routine of reality television was significantly distinct from what he’s accustomed to, leading him to lose his patience on set.

In an interview with The Mirror, he shared, “On The Chase, I’m accustomed to operating within a carefully planned setting where timing is crucial. However, in the realm of reality TV, things can stretch out over longer periods, and before you realize it, the day ends much later than anticipated.

Mark, who openly expresses his belief that he might be on the autism spectrum without a formal diagnosis, shared that his psychological well-being was impacted during the show.

‘I discovered that I require time to recharge my social energy, which is particularly important for someone like me on the autism spectrum.’

Additionally, he disclosed that his suspected neurodivergence has made it challenging for him to decipher the emotions and intentions of others when it comes to romantic relationships.

From now on, Mark intends to apply the insights gained from making the show to all his upcoming deals, so as to avoid any more instances of inappropriate behavior.

In simpler terms, he mentioned that he became rather cranky on the film set. He did express his apologies to everyone involved, but for future projects, he prefers to include in his contract specific times for rest and naps to rejuvenate.

As a diligent adherent, I’d like to share an incident: One night, my glucose levels soared beyond the usual range, according to the data recorded by my glucose monitor.

This prompted his co-star Kerry Katona to joke: ‘And Mark went off the scale too!’ 

Despite being a challenging learning experience for the main actor, he remains eager for the show’s debut.

In my fervent admiration for Mark, I can’t help but delve deeper into his recent journey of seeking love. It wasn’t just his grumpy demeanor that posed a challenge; he encountered an unexpected health hiccup on the set of Celebs Go Dating. This unwelcome incident momentarily suspended the filming process.

The presenter experienced a condition called a low-blood-sugar episode, which occurs when someone’s blood sugar levels drop significantly, leading to symptoms such as tremors and perspiration.

Recalling the moment, Mark said: ‘One night, I had a hypoglycaemic attack.

‘I might have been a bit grumpy that night. I apologised to everyone after.’ 

Previously, Mark was involved with television host Hayley Palmer, who is now 43 years old. However, they parted ways just a week following their one-year anniversary last year.

Mark unexpectedly chose to end the relationship, taking Hayley by surprise when he called it off over the phone, ending their romantic connection.

Later, the presenter on The Chase attributed their relationship to the 16-year difference in their ages and told The Sun that he felt incredibly fortunate to have dated her for a whole year.

Prior to this, he was married to Katie Lawrence, 32, who was 27 years his junior. 

For seven years, this pair had been inseparable, sharing parenthood of a single boy, their precious son. However, in the year 2020, they decided to go their separate ways, and it was reported that their significant age difference played a role in their separation.
