Soulja Boy arrested near his Melrose clothing shop on suspicion of felony weapons possession

Rapper Soulja Boy is once again embroiled in legal issues, following on from when he was held responsible for sexually harassing, physically and psychologically tormenting an ex-assistant several months ago.

On Sunday morning around 2:50 AM, authorities in Los Angeles apprehended Soulja Boy, the famous 35-year-old rap artist recognized for songs like “Crank That (Soulja Boy)” and “Kiss Me Thru the Phone,” on suspicion of being a previously convicted felon carrying a firearm. This information was confirmed by a police representative to The Times. The incident occurred near the crossroads of Genesee Avenue and Melrose Avenue, where a traffic stop was conducted, and Soulja Boy – whose real name is DeAndre Cortez Way – was detained. The arrest happened just a few blocks west of his Melrose clothing store, SODMG Brand.

During their examination of the vehicle, officers discovered Way was among the passengers. Later that same morning, approximately 6 a.m., the police arrested the rapper and took him into custody at the LAPD’s Wilshire Division, as per the records from the sheriff department’s inmate database.

In a humorous response, Marlon Wayans uses Soulja Boy’s whole musical career as material for a witty comeback, following the ‘Pretty Boy Swag’ rapper’s use of derogatory comments against the LGBTQ+ community, specifically targeting Wayans and his transgender son.

Further details about the reason behind the traffic stop and the presence of other individuals in the car were not disclosed by the police at first. Representatives for Soulja Boy have yet to provide a comment regarding this matter when contacted by The Times on Monday.

Originating from Chicago and boasting a Grammy nod, Soulja Boy gained popularity during the early 2000s; however, he’s recently encountered legal issues due to how he’s treated the women in his close confidants.

Back in April 2023, a jury in Santa Monica supported his ex-girlfriend’s lawsuit from 2020, which accused him of assault, kidnapping, privacy invasion, among other offenses. Two years later, in the aftermath of that ruling, Soulja Boy was determined responsible for sexually assaulting and inflicting both physical and emotional abuse on a previous assistant.

In April, following a three-week trial, a jury in Santa Monica determined that Soulja Boy was responsible for exceeding $4 million in compensatory damages to a woman. However, the rapper’s main defense lawyer expressed dissent towards this verdict.

Attorney Rickey Ivie stated in April that the evidence doesn’t back up the court’s decision. It’s regrettable that biased opinions and misunderstandings about the culture involved affected the trial. Mr. Way plans to exercise his options after the trial and work towards a fair outcome in this case.
