Anticipation for the second installment of Wednesday, airing on Netflix this week, is running high, especially among fans of the initial season like myself. However, much like others, I felt the romantic angle in the first season was somewhat out of character. The lead actress, Jenna Ortega, has been fielding questions about the romance aspect as we approach the new season. She suggests that she portrayed it differently than some viewers may have perceived… and she’s certainly correct.
In a new interview clip posted to Entertainment Tonight’s official Instagram account, the interviewer asks how “enjoyable” it was for the actress to focus on the titular character’s personal struggles instead of boys this season. Ortega pushed back a bit on this notion, sharing that she didn’t see her performance in season one as focusing on boys. Instead, she explained:
To be fair, I feel like the first season I kind of played it that way anyway.
In the first season, although the storyline centered around romantic aspects involving a character, the interviewer acknowledges that no gifts were given to the boys by her. Ortega then added:
I didn’t consider I showed much favoritism towards either boy; it wasn’t significant for me. But focusing a bit more on the distressing events of Wednesday and the violent scenes made the experience more engaging for me, so that was enjoyable.
As someone who absolutely adores anything soft, sticky, and eerie, I’m overjoyed that the creators of Wednesday, including the cast and production team, have opted for “violence”. This choice sounds exciting and seems a fitting tribute to the classic character.
In the first season’s romantic entanglements, some viewers might not have found a connection, but it appears many adored the bond between Enid and Wednesday. And let me tell you, I was one of those fans! What truly excites me is the prospect of seeing more of their unique blend – sweetness and spice, teamwork, and collaboration – from this fascinating duo in future episodes.
As the Season 2 TV schedule for 2025 approaches, Ortega’s comments on the character’s love life have answered one query. However, the trailer for Season 2 has only sparked more intrigue. For instance, who will Steve Buscemi portray in the series? Ever since it was disclosed that he is part of Wednesday, I’ve been eager to learn about his character, and the initial footage didn’t offer much insight. But thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long to uncover the truth!
If you were among those who enjoyed the romantic elements in season one, I regret to inform you that the character’s lack of interest towards male characters persists in the next chapter, and I can’t wait to see it play out! The first half of Wednesday season 2 will become accessible to everyone with a Netflix subscription from August 6 onwards.
