NBC News correspondent Jacob Soboroff is set to work exclusively for MSNBC upon its separation into a new company, named Versant.
This year, MSNBC will move to Versant, marking its new independent base as the separate housing for Comcast’s cable networks.
Consequently, MSNBC will establish its own editorial team independent from NBC News, and they will no longer share resources. Additionally, the iconic NBC peacock symbol will no longer be part of the MSNBC logo.
Starting from now, I’ll be exclusively appearing on either NBC’s broadcast programs or MSNBC. However, there’s an exception to this rule – Willie Geist will continue to anchor both MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” and NBC’s “Sunday Today.
As a fellow Californian, I’ve been deeply moved by Soboroff’s poignant coverage of the devastating Palisades fire that claimed his childhood home earlier this year. Now, he stands out as one of the most prominent figures to depart from NBC News amidst their recent changes. Fortunately for us West Coasters, he intends to continue his work and remain based on our dynamic coastline.

In 2015, Soboroff, aged 42, joined MSNBC as a correspondent. Subsequently, he was designated as an NBC News correspondent and more recently has often taken on the role of a temporary co-host for “Today,” the network’s popular morning show.
Employees at NBC News who work across both their broadcast and cable divisions have been given the option to pick which entity they wish to remain with. The majority of NBC News staff members are opting to stay with the network. Notably, Steve Kornacki, a popular statistical analyst for MSNBC’s election nights, has decided to join the broadcast network instead, as he also contributes to NBC Sports.

In a weekly, private setting free from political chaos, Wallace engages in one-on-one discussions with ‘Remarkable Individuals’.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I find myself being drawn towards the captivating world of MSNBC. It’s quite unexpected, given the current industry landscape.
As a movie critic, I find myself reflecting on the evolving landscape of television, particularly when it comes to Comcast’s decision to spin off their cable networks. It seems that they are acknowledging the challenging future these mature outlets may face, as the trend of pay TV cord-cutting looms large and heavy, pulling down stock prices.
One such network that has experienced a significant decline is MSNBC, currently the second most popular cable news channel following Fox News. Over the past decade, its reach into pay TV homes has shrunk by an alarming 33%. This shift underscores the need for companies like Comcast to adapt and evolve in order to stay afloat in this rapidly changing media landscape.
Some notable figures haven’t shied away from trying out the startup. For instance, earlier this week, Versant revealed that Meghan Rafferty, an executive producer for “NBC Nightly News”, has decided to join their team as Vice President of News Standards.
NBC News is transferring some of its correspondents to their cable division. Ken Dilanian, who specializes in coverage of the Justice Department, is among those making the move. Vaughn Hillyard is transitioning into a senior White House correspondent role, and David Noriega will be stationed as a national correspondent in Los Angeles.
The new company has also attracted talent and executives from CNN, Politico and the New York Times.
Unofficially, television news personnel hint at anticipating job cuts within their NBC News division over the course of the next year due to a drop in ratings and ad revenue for broadcast television. (At this point, no official announcements regarding layoffs have been made.)
Despite encountering comparable hurdles on their way to Versant (consisting of CNBC, Golf Channel, and USA Network), the breakaway team is actively recruiting personnel and assures significant financial backing for the profitable channels.
Correspondents are also attracted to the platform that a 24-hour cable network provides.
Son of Los Angeles civic leader Steve Soboroff, Soboroff himself, has taken an interest in topics that resonate with viewers of MSNBC.
In 2018, I vigorously delved into the family separation crisis at the southern border, an investigation that ultimately garnered me a Cronkite Award. Fast forward to 2024, I penned a book on this topic and executive produced a documentary that was nominated for an Emmy.
In June 2025, Soboroff was at the helm of MSNBC’s news broadcast, reporting on ICE raids in Los Angeles that sparked subsequent protests. His upcoming publication, titled “Firestorm: The Great Los Angeles Fires and America’s New Era of Disasters,” is slated for release in January.
