Sheridan Smith’s “heartbreaking” new ITV drama confirms autumn release with first-look stills

Sheridan Smith’s real-life drama I Fought the Law has confirmed a release window for this autumn.

Later this year, I can’t wait to tune into a TV series on ITV that draws inspiration from Ann Ming’s harrowing legal journey following the tragic murder of her daughter, Julie.

In the production, Smith portrays Ann, a character advocating for the repeal of the UK’s Double Jeopardy Law. This is due to the fact that Julie’s killer was initially found not guilty but later admitted to the crime.

The series also stars Daniel York Loh as Ann’s husband Charlie and Victoria Wyant as Julie.

Based on Ming’s book titled “For The Love of Julie”, and with Ming serving as a consultant, the series has unveiled initial photographs that depict Smith portraying Ming during various stages of her pursuit of justice.

In a statement, Ming expressed great satisfaction as ITV and Hera Pictures plan to narrate the tale of my mission to repeal the Double Jeopardy Law.

I won’t let the fact that the person who took my daughter’s life went free unchallenged. I will do everything in my power to ensure justice is served for Julie.

Ming also said it was “wonderful” to have Smith playing her in the series.

She expressed delight, saying, “I’m amazed that Sheridan Smith will be taking on the role of me. To have a renowned and gifted actress like her bringing me to life is simply marvelous.

In her own words, the actress expressed her gratitude for being given the opportunity to portray Ann Ming, a tenacious mother who dedicated 15 years of her life to advocating for a change in the Double Jeopardy Law, driven by her daughter’s tragic murder.

She added: “She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude.”

I Fought the Law airs on ITV and streams on ITVX this autumn.
