Amber Davies hits out at ‘selfish’ theatre goer for ‘ruining’ her West End performance in The Great Gatsby in furious online rant

Previous Love Island champion Amber Davies has criticized an inconsiderate theatergoer for marring her experience in the West End production of The Great Gatsby.

The actress from the theater, aged 28, posted a photo on Instagram while still wearing her stage makeup backstage at the London Coliseum after performing in her most recent play.

On the heels of Saturday’s evening’s captivating show, I find myself compelled to offer a friendly reminder to fellow music enthusiasts. During the performance, I was momentarily taken aback by an engaging spectator. So, let us all strive for undisturbed focus and immerse ourselves fully in the enchanting world of live music.

She warned her Instagram audience, “This is a public service announcement. When you’re at a concert or performance and you’re near the stage, it becomes noticeable if you’re recording.

* This encompasses the entire seating area. If you’re shooting from here, we can spot you! I thought I’d share some insights on our perspective from up here. So, from where we stand, it looks like a large, dark backdrop with the occasional outline of heads.

If you’re recording, the light reflections directly come back from your iPhone screen and are visible to us on stage. Therefore, that’s the only thing we can clearly see. Later, she pointed out a specific spectator for not adhering to certain rules or expectations.

‘So to the woman filming New Money tonight – you distracted absolutely everybody on that stage.

Additionally, it detaches us from the Gatsby universe since your filming disrupts that special scene for everyone else who was enjoying the performance tonight.

As a connoisseur of all things lifestyle, let me gently remind you that self-centered behavior can be disruptive and detrimental to others. During live shows or events, when you notice someone capturing footage, kindly inform them that their actions may negatively impact the performers on stage. Frankly, it can be quite irritating for everyone involved. Let’s all strive to create an enjoyable and considerate environment for everyone!

In my expert advice, I’d be happy to assist by providing details about your seating location at the event. Specifically, I’ll identify the number of seats behind yours and inform our stage manager accordingly. Furthermore, I’ll describe your distinctive hair color to them. However, please be aware that during the intermission, you may be asked to delete any footage captured. Essentially, this assistance will not result in any tangible benefits for you.

‘Okay, I’m gonna enjoy act two now.’

From April 16 to September 7, the performance, taking place at the London Coliseum, vividly portrays F. Scott Fitzgerald’s famous tale in an awe-inspiring manner.

In February, the complete casting for the West End production was revealed.

Alongside Jamie Muscato as Jay Gatsby and Frances Mayli McCann as Daisy Buchanan, we have Corbin Bleu cast as Nick Carraway, Amber Davies portraying Jordan Baker, Joel Montague taking on George Wilson, John Owen-Jones for Meyer Wolfsheim, Jon Robyns as Tom Buchanan, and Rachel Tucker in the role of Myrtle Wilson.

Based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s renowned American novel, The Great Gatsby narrates the enigmatic story of self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby who yearns to rekindle the love of his past, Daisy Buchanan, a married socialite and his old flame.

In 2024, this musical made its debut on Broadway and received the Tony Award for Best Costume Design. Now, it’s coming to London after its premier performance there.

Earlier in January, the star lashed out at trolls who criticised her for her work schedule.

In 2017, the winner of Love Island posted on Instagram about going back to work at Universal Music Group’s studios, where it was presumed she was recording her podcast titled “Call to Stage”.

In a caption for her mirror selfie on the first workday of 2025, Amber wrote: ‘Ready to dive in’ or ‘Let’s get this year started’, followed by: ‘Here we go!’ or ‘Off I go’.

Despite appearing upbeat about resuming her routine, she encountered criticism due to returning to work merely 20 days into the New Year.

Another photo on Amber’s story subsequently displayed the reactions to her previous post, where someone commented: “Picture yourself working for only half of a month” accompanied by an expression of disbelief emoticons.

Responding coolly to the critique, Amber subsequently commented on the screenshot, taking a jab at the critic while suggesting they avoid passing judgment, and expressing that she had taken some time off for herself prior.

For the past year, I’ve been on tour and living out of a suitcase without a single day off, performing eight shows each week. Just before Christmas, I was working non-stop as well. So, please be understanding if it seems like I’m taking some time off now; I just need a break.

Amber mentioned the effort she put in was spending a whole year playing the character Vivian Ward in the traveling version of the Pretty Woman musical.

Later, she responded to the criticisms by posting a video on her stories, where she discussed the challenges of being self-employed. She also mentioned that she would have taken on work if it had been available.

Addressing the camera, Amber shared her sentiments: “I’m truly fond of the internet. People often tell me, ‘You don’t have to explain yourself.’ To which I respond, ‘Explain myself for being self-employed?’

She added: “Indeed, for about half of the past month, I had time off due to two reasons. Firstly, since I am self-employed, and secondly, I felt I truly needed a rest. Nevertheless, if tasks had been available, I would’ve certainly worked on them.

Captioning her clip, she added: ‘Love to the self employed’.
