Monica Dolan has joined the cast of the hit BBC sitcom Smoggie Queens.
In the second season of the series, which is currently being filmed, the character from Sherwood will make an appearance. She’ll be sharing screen time with Amalia Vitale from Big Mood and Freya Parker from Lazy Susan, further enhancing the show’s supporting ensemble.
Located in Middlesbrough, the series “Smoggie Queens” delves into the lively stories of a close-knit circle of friends who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. The initial season was met with praise from critics and clinched the title for ‘Best Comedy’ at the RTS North East Awards.
In 2025, Phil Dunning, both the creator, writer, and star of the show, received three BAFTA nominations. One of these nominations was for ‘Best Male Performance in a Comedy Programme’, recognizing his role as Dickie.
In the second season, you’ll find it streaming on BBC Three and iPlayer, delivering even more chuckles from slapstick humor and silliness. Viewers can expect a veritable feast of delight!

In the upcoming production, Dunning will once again take on the character of Dickie. Joining him are Mark Benton as Mam, Alexandra Mardell as Lucinda, Patsy Lowe as Sal, and Elijah Young as Stewart.
The synopsis indicates that the group demonstrates the spirit and tenacity of the North East region and the LGBTQ+ community as they form new connections, reconnect with old acquaintances, and solidify their chosen family ties, all while moving forward.

“Expect more mad antics and chaotic energy as the Queens take you on (another) ride of your life!”
In the second season, we’ll see some familiar faces like Michelle Visage from RuPaul’s Drag Race, Charlotte Riley of Peaky Blinders, Bill Fellows from Ted Lasso, and Michael Hodgson of Vera. They’re joined by newcomers Lauryn Redding, Peter McPherson, Neil Grainger, Michael Mather, and Steph McGovern.
Dunning expressed his delight at having numerous members of the Smoggie family back for Season 2, and he’s thrilled to add the exceptionally skilled newcomers to the mix. He can hardly contain his excitement to create TV and share parmos with everyone.
Smoggie Queens is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
