On Sunday evening at The Star in Sydney, Jelena Dokic fought back emotions while graciously receiving her very first Logie Award.
Previously successful in tennis at 42 years old, she was awarded the accolade for Best Reality/Documentary Production in recognition of her documentary titled “Unbreakable: The Jelena Dokic Story.
She openly acknowledged being completely taken aback by the victory, revealing that she hadn’t composed a speech beforehand and instead intended to improvise if her name was announced.
She started, her voice quivering, “I’m sorry, but due to needing a moment to compose myself, it might take me around 30 seconds more than you suggested.
‘I’m actually in shock. I didn’t think this was possible and I didn’t have a speech prepared.’

She told her Channel Nine colleagues, including Todd, that they’d improvise the situation… She admitted later on that she had misjudged it.
In an emotional speech, Dokic expressed gratitude towards the production team at Roadshow, In Films, as well as her partners Ivan, Manny, and Jessica. She acknowledged their faith in her story when she herself had doubts about its feasibility, praising them for their role in bringing it to life onscreen.
She mentioned, “It’s all thanks to you that we’re here discussing this possibility. Without your actions, we wouldn’t have found ourselves sitting at the table.
I am truly indebted to you for having faith in me and making this story come alive on the big screen. Frankly, I had my doubts when we first discussed it. I remember asking, “Is this really feasible?” So, thank you deeply for turning my skepticism into reality.
Apart from acknowledging Channel Nine’s support in producing the documentary, Dokic also expressed gratitude for their unwavering companionship ever since she became part of their network.
To Brent and Ben, you risked and trusted in me on all fronts, seven years ago, and you truly believed in me – not only for the documentary but for every venture I undertake. From the depths of my heart, I express my gratitude to you. You have always stood by me, she expressed.
However, the most poignant instance for Dokic occurred when she honored her victory by acknowledging it to survivors of domestic abuse and individuals fighting mental health issues.
She stated, “This isn’t focused on who wins; rather, it’s a triumph for those who have experienced domestic violence and mental health issues, primarily the victims and survivors.

She emphasized the importance of not only giving these tales a hearing, but also helping them regain their vitality, discover their unique expression, and flourish rather than merely existing. She wanted to create an environment where they could truly be discussed.
As an ardent admirer, let me share a powerful message I once received: “Never let anyone rob you of your value, joy, or smile. Embrace your aspirations and visions. I stand before you as a living testament – someone who dared to dream, who held onto that dream, and never wavered. If I managed to make it happen, so can you.
Eventually, she showed clear signs of emotion while expressing gratitude towards her dear friend and guide, Todd Woodbridge. She acknowledged that he was instrumental in helping her discover her voice following her retirement from professional tennis.
‘You’re my person,’ she said through tears.
Reflecting back on those days when I hung up my jersey 11 years ago, your words echoed in my ears: “You could be a commentator and speaker, sharing your incredible journey with the world.” At first, I chuckled, thinking it was someone else you were referring to, not me. But here we are today, with me embracing that role and bringing my story to life, all thanks to your encouragement.
Initially, I struggled with forming coherent thoughts into sentences and lacked the necessary social graces. However, you showed faith in my abilities. I sincerely hope that everyone can find someone as supportive and inspiring as you were for me.
Woodbridge smiled broadly from the crowd as Dokic finished by saying, “You’ve been a major factor in me being up here in every aspect.
‘Should everyone be blessed with a dad and guide as exceptional as Todd, they’d truly consider themselves lucky. Many thanks to all of you.’
