Disney Is Reportedly Preparing to Re-Release the Original Star Wars Movie to Cinemas for the 50th Anniversary

Finally there’s something nearly every Star Wars fan can get excited about!

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share the news that Disney and Lucasfilm are planning to bring back “Star Wars: A New Hope,” the iconic 1977 film that sparked the Star Wars saga, to the big screen on April 30, 2027. This special return is part of a grand, year-long celebration, with screenings scheduled around the unofficial franchise holiday, “May the Fourth.” This exciting news, first reported by Deadline, gains more credibility considering it’s being picked up by an official Hollywood trade publication.

Despite taking place almost a month before the official May 25th anniversary release, the timing is tactically chosen to prevent the re-release from competing with the much-anticipated new film “Star Wars: Starfighter”, scheduled for May 2027 release. The film, starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy, is expected to further ignite the resurgence of Star Wars on the big screen, following the acclaim garnered by recent cinematic reissues and Disney+ series.

It’s been widely discussed that Disney could potentially unveil the original versions of George Lucas’ Star Wars films, following Kathleen Kennedy’s recent screening of the early, rarely seen version to viewers this year. She playfully hinted that such a move might border on illegality.

Analysts highlight the impressive domestic box-office earnings of around $25 million from the April 2025 re-release of Revenge of the Sith, suggesting that nostalgic theater events continue to hold significant appeal for the franchise, despite the current streaming content trend.

Over the weekend, I found myself revisiting “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith,” which was initially released two decades ago. To my surprise, it still managed to captivate audiences and rake in a staggering $42.2 million worldwide at the box office. It’s amazing how timeless this film remains!

To mark its 20th anniversary, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith generated approximately $25.2 million in domestic box office sales, securing the second position overall. The movie was screened across 2,775 theaters within the U.S., and for the first time, it was presented in 4DX format. Simultaneously, it was played in select international markets such as Germany (where it debuted at No. 1), France, Spain, UK, Australia, Brazil, and Mexico, raking in an estimated $17 million internationally.

Disney’s decision to re-release Star Wars: A New Hope in cinemas underscores both popular demand and an attempt to recapture the grandeur of the Star Wars saga on the big screen. This offers a unique opportunity for many viewers to witness the film as it first debuted, with all its classic elements such as the opening crawl, original soundtrack, and the full impact of its cinematic grandiosity.
