Magda Szubanski to be inducted into Logies Hall of Fame following shock cancer diagnosis

Magda Szubanski will be inducted into the Logies Hall of Fame on Sunday night.

In just two short months following her unexpected cancer announcement, the renowned Kath and Kim actress, at 64 years old, is set to leave an indelible mark in the history of Australian television with a highly respected accolade.

As a committed fan, I regret to share that unfortunately, I won’t be gracing The Star in Sydney with my presence for the upcoming glamorous event, as I am currently undergoing treatment that leaves me immunocompromised. This information has been confirmed by recent reports from The Daily Telegraph.

The organizers shared with the media that they had already decided to honor Magda by inducting her into the Hall of Fame, prior to her disclosing her cancer diagnosis.

It was stated that Magda’s impact on comedy, literature, activism, and Australian cultural identity is deep and significant.

They noted that this induction into the TV Week Logie Awards Hall of Fame honors not just an extraordinary television profession, but also a life spent molding emotions, news, and historical events, as well as bestowing viewers with countless moments of laughter.

Magda will be the fifth woman to be inducted into the Hall of Fame since it was introduced in 1984.

She’ll be joining esteemed company, including Ruth Cracknell, Noni Hazlehurst, Kerri-Anne Kennerley, and Rebecca Gibney.

Over a professional journey of four decades, Magda has established herself as one of Australia’s most familiar comic personas, gracing shows such as The D-Generation, Fast Forward, and Full Frontal.

In my cinematic journey, I’ve made an impact, gracing the silver screen in films like Babe, Happy Feet, and The Golden Compass.

However, it’s likely her memorable performance in the popular ABC sitcom Kath and Kim that she’s most recognized for.

In the captivating world of television, I’ve had the pleasure of embodying the character of Sharon Strzelecki – a role that found me as the eternally optimistic, netball-enthusiastic, and cricket-loving confidante to Kim Craig, portrayed by the exceptional Gina Riley.

Apart from hers, you’ll find three Logie awards adorning the mantle, each one acknowledging her as the Most Popular Comedy Personality in the years 1991, 1992, and 1996.

Magda has passionately advocated for the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, and her efforts towards the passage of the Marriage Equality Act were recognized with the award of Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2018.

Two months ago, Magda revealed that she had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer at the age of 64.

She showed up on camera, sporting a bald head, to announce startling news following her initiation of cancer treatment.

Greetings everyone, so it’s been confirmed that I have an uncommon, severe, and aggressive type of lymphoma. As a precautionary measure, I’ve decided to shave my head since I expect to lose my hair within the next few weeks.

Magda disclosed that she’s begun using a therapy in Melbourne called the Nordic protocol, an approach designed for mantle cell lymphoma. This treatment aims to reduce tumors by employing a series of medications distributed across five stages.

It’s known as the Nordic regimen based on its clinical trial sites in Denmark and Norway.

The actress explained she will be ‘lying very low’ due to her weak immune system.
