Chris Brown’s Breezy Bowl tour kicks off U.S. leg by being sued for trademark infringement

Chris Brown’s latest tour has landed him in the hot seat over trademark issues.

According to a lawsuit filed on Wednesday, Breezy Swimwear claims that Brown, their tour partner Live Nation, and Shopify have infringed upon their trademark. This dispute stems from Breezy Swimwear’s annual “Breezy Bowl” event, which has been held since 2023 and is described as an extraordinary showcase of swimwear fashion unlike any other.

The conflict? Brown’s tour is called Breezy Bowl XX, and sells swimsuits as tour merchandise.

The swimwear company alleges that Brown’s tour has led to other brands imitating their well-known brand identity, a practice often referred to as “duplicating an existing brand.

On Instagram, posted on July 20th, Kris Izquierdo (founder and CEO of Breezy Swimwear) compared the situation to a potential trademark infringement lawsuit against Lady Gaga, scheduled for March 2025, concerning her Mayhem Ball tour merchandise.

If followers of Chris Brown are seen sporting Breezy Bowl apparel, as stated in the video, there’s no question that this could lead to some misunderstandings. However, it also serves to strengthen the Breezy Bowl name and demonstrates that we possess something worthwhile.

In about ten days, the company’s legal representative will initiate a lawsuit in a Florida court. “Fame doesn’t give celebrities the right to rename small businesses,” said John Hoover to TMZ.

Chris Brown’s representatives declined to provide a comment when contacted by The Times on Thursday.

The example refers to a situation where Chris Brown’s Team Breezy swimwear launch happened simultaneously with his tour announcement, leading to perplexity among consumers. It also mentions the significance of Google search result rankings and Chris Brown’s Breezy Bowl afterparty at Fontainebleau Miami Beach LIV Nightclub, which just so happens to be the same location that had previously hosted a similar event for the brand on July 21, 2024.

The example talks about how Chris Brown launching his swimwear line and announcing his tour at the same time might have caused some confusion among fans. It also mentions Google search results and Chris Brown’s afterparty for the Breezy Bowl event held at LIV Nightclub in Miami Beach, which had previously hosted a similar event for his brand on July 21, 2024.

Significantly, Breezy Swimwear asserts it has owned the rights to the “Breezy” trademark since its establishment in 2018 and “Breezy Bowl” since 2023. Legal records indicate that the brand is pursuing an injunction to prevent the use of the “Breezy Bowl” name on any products, social media, or promotional materials. They also seek the surrender and destruction or disposal of any goods displaying the allegedly infringing marks.

Furthermore, it aims for financial compensation equivalent to the earnings derived from the trademark, in other words, seeking a situation where Defendants return all unjustified profits, or “to ensure Defendants fully relinquish their unfair advantages.

In my role as a movie critic, I find myself under a similar time constraint – I have just 21 days, starting from July 30, to offer a verdict. Failure to respond within this window could result in an automatic forfeit, much like how a default judgment is handed down in a court case.

Chris Brown is staying in London until mid-June because he’s under investigation for an alleged assault involving a tequila bottle. His tour kickoff is scheduled for June 8, but he has to stay put until his next court date arrives.

Regardless of an ongoing lawsuit, Brown’s U.S. tour kicked off on Wednesday at LoanDepot Park Stadium in Miami. His schedule indicates a stop at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood on September 13th.

The situation became known not long after Brown’s arrest in London on May 15, which was related to a pending assault and battery charge.

In October 2023, Producer Amadou “Abe” Diaw alleged that Brown had hit him with a Don Julio 1942 tequila bottle. However, on June 27, 2023, Diaw voluntarily withdrew the civil lawsuit he filed against Brown.

Despite the fact that Brown is still facing criminal charges stemming from the same event, he has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and carrying a harmful weapon. His trial is scheduled for October 26, 2026.

Initially, Brown’s detention was planned to last until June 13, casting doubt over his Breezy Bowl tour since it was slated to commence on June 15. However, he secured bail on May 21, following a $6.7 million payment, which allowed the world tour to proceed as originally arranged.

As a diehard fan, I was thrilled to witness the kickoff of the tour in the United States last night at LoanDepot Park Stadium in Miami. It was a packed house! The tour continues with a stop at Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium on September 13th, and I can hardly wait!
