UTA and MediaLink founder end legal fight over acquisition

After a dispute concerning the 2021 acquisition, Michael Kassan, founder of United Talent Agency and MediaLink, decided to mutually withdraw their legal actions against one another.

UTA and Michael Kassan have chosen to resolve their disagreement peacefully. Neither side is authorized to provide additional information,” stated representatives from both parties on Thursday.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

This week, UTA’s partner, Michael Kassan, who joined the company in 2021, initiated a legal dispute against the talent agency. In response, UTA countered with a lawsuit of their own, claiming that Kassan misused funds amounting to millions, using them to support his expensive lifestyle instead.

In 2021, Universal Talent Agency (UTA) decided to acquire MediaLink, a strategic consultancy firm owned by Kassan, for a total of $125 million. Based in Beverly Hills, UTA aimed that this purchase would broaden its horizons in the branding sector.

However, disputes emerged as both parties pointed fingers at one another for violating the agreed terms. UTA asserted that Kassan’s expenses were excessive and accused him of squandering millions of UTA’s funds on extravagant personal indulgences.

Kassan stated that UTA had full knowledge of his financial activities and that his company remained profitable throughout its time with UTA. He claimed, however, that UTA did not adhere to the agreed-upon terms, including a pledge for UTA’s marketing department to report directly to him. Furthermore, Kassan’s legal representative argued that while UTA was gaining from MediaLink through free media advice and connections, MediaLink was not receiving any reciprocal benefits from this relationship.

UTA, in legal filings and public statements, denied Kassan’s allegations.

As a movie enthusiast, I’ve learned that a court has recently thrown out a defamation case Michael Kassan, a previous partner at United Talent Agency, had lodged against the agency’s legal representative, Bryan Freedman.

In the year 2024, Kassan initiated a libel case aimed at UTA’s legal advisor. However, this lawsuit was eventually discarded by a judge.

Kassan launched L.A. consulting firm 3C Ventures in 2024.
