The 2025 reboot of Superman, titled “Man of Steel,” has now become the highest-earning standalone Superman movie ever shown in U.S. cinemas. Directed by James Gunn, this blockbuster hit reached this impressive milestone a mere 18 days after its premiere, indicating a strong start for the freshly launched DC Universe. The film’s success underscores growing excitement among fans for the new phase in the Superman saga on the big screen.
Superman’s domestic box office makes it the highest grossing Man of Steel movie
James Gunn’s version of Superman has outperformed Man of Steel in the U.S., setting a new record as the highest-earning standalone Superman movie in American cinema history. As reported by Box Office Mojo, Superman has amassed $292.4 million domestically so far, surpassing the $291 million earned by Man of Steel in 2013.
In just 18 days since its release on July 11, 2025, the new DCU film starring David Corenswet has achieved a significant milestone. This marks the official start of the DC Universe reboot under DC Studios. Not only has it surpassed the domestic earnings of all previous Superman movies featuring Christopher Reeve and Superman Returns (2006), which made $200 million in the U.S., but it has also outdone them.
Although Superman has been successful within its home market, it encounters difficulties on the global stage. To date, it has made $214.1 million abroad, adding up to a total worldwide earnings of $506.5 million. On the other hand, Man of Steel garnered $379.1 million internationally and a grand total of $670.1 million globally. This suggests that Superman may not outperform Man of Steel financially on a global scale, even before accounting for inflation.
James Gunn, the director, pointed out the lower international attendance and explained, “There’s some anti-American feelings circulating globally at present, which might be contributing to this trend. It’s definitely not benefiting us.” Additionally, he conceded that Superman is not as well-known or popular in certain parts of the world. (via Deadline)
As a movie critic, I find it fascinating to delve into the financial success of iconic films like Superman and Man of Steel. When analyzing their respective revenues, it’s clear that Superman has an edge at home, with a whopping 57.7% of its total earnings coming from domestic box offices – a higher ratio than Man of Steel, which garnered 56.6% of its global earnings overseas. Unless international interest significantly escalates for Superman, it seems that this superhero might remain in the shadow when it comes to worldwide earnings compared to its counterpart.
By July 30, 2025, Superman has garnered an impressive 83% approval from film critics and a remarkable 91% appreciation from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. This is in contrast to Man of Steel, which received a slightly lower rating with 57% critic’s approval and 75% audience satisfaction.
