The Arrival of Netflix’s The Sandman Season 2 Unfolds More Tales from Greek Mythology
In this installment, we delve deeper into the narrative, focusing on a pivotal idea – the concept of a benefit or reward, often referred to as a boon in this context. This significant notion is instrumental in unfolding the heart-wrenching saga of Morpheus, the embodiment of Dream, and his son, Orpheus. Yet, you may wonder what a boon implies in this scenario and why it holds such weight? Let us delve into the intricacies.
The meaning of a boon in The Sandman Season 2 explained
In the fifth episode of Season 2, The Sandman transports viewers back in time by approximately 300 years, delving into the poignant legend of Orpheus and Eurydice – a tale that serves not only as a mythological reference but also as the emotional core of the narrative.
In simpler terms, Oxford Dictionary defines “boon” as a prayer or request, but in the series “The Sandman,” it is influenced by Greek mythology. A boon often signifies a favor bestowed by a deity, such as a god fulfilling another being’s wish, however, it usually comes with significant emotional or moral consequences. The show emphasizes this meaning, using it as a crucial event in the relationship between Dream and Orpheus.
On their wedding day, Eurydice is fatally bitten by a snake. Overwhelmed with grief, Orpheus begs his father to give up his life instead. However, Dream denies the request, which shatters the bond between them and leads Orpheus on a heartbreaking path of self-discovery.
Orpheus takes control of the situation and receives immortality from the timeless beings. Then, he ventures into the Underworld for a confrontation with Hades himself. In a scene reminiscent of mythology, Hades proposes a deal: Orpheus can rescue Eurydice, but there’s a catch. He must exit the underworld without looking back or addressing her directly.
Almost succeeding until fear overcomes him and Orpheus looks back, he loses Eurydice and seals their fate with a broken agreement. She disappears once more into the Underworld, leaving behind a bitter memory. However, the term “boon” reappears in season 2. When Orpheus meets Dream again after many centuries, he asks for one last wish – not life, but death. In the end, understanding the heavy burden of his denial, Dream grants it and assists Orpheus in achieving his final wish – death.
