Earlier, when discussing the series, Turner mentioned that playing some of the more emotional scenes between Joan and her daughter Kelly was made easier due to being a mother herself. She referred to their relationship as the “heart” or “core” of the storyline.

During breaks when we weren’t filming scenes with Kelly, director Richard Laxton would often approach me and ask, “Where is Kelly?
