Sophie Turner’s popular period drama Joan, unfortunately, won’t be coming back for another season on ITV, as scheduling conflicts within the cast made a second series impossible.
In the pulsating ’80s, I find myself stepping into the shoes of Game of Thrones’ Turner, portraying the true-to-life jewel thief Joan Hannington. My journey unfolds as I navigate the delicate dance between my criminal escapades and my duties as a mother, trying to strike a balance that keeps both worlds spinning.
After airing on ITV last year, the drama garnered praise from both viewers and critics, and the way the final episode ended seemed to hint at another season.
In a confirmed statement, the show will not be renewed. This information was shared by an ITV representative through The Radio Times.
ITV and Snowed-In Productions express their interest in creating another season of ‘Joan.’ Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts with the cast and negotiations regarding joint production, a second season unfortunately couldn’t be arranged.
Earlier, when discussing the series, Turner mentioned that playing some of the more emotional scenes between Joan and her daughter Kelly was made easier due to being a mother herself. She referred to their relationship as the “heart” or “core” of the storyline.
During breaks when we weren’t filming scenes with Kelly, director Richard Laxton would often approach me and ask, “Where is Kelly?
This served as an unceasing reminder for her: “This is the reason behind her actions.” It might be that when engaged in a performance like this, which has a heist element and features diamonds and glamour, one can easily become captivated by the spectacle itself.
It’s crucial to understand that she’s doing this to ensure a secure future for her daughter and to regain custody. This tale is deeply moving, which is why it’s important to frequently remind ourselves of the bigger picture to stay focused and avoid getting overly enthusiastic.
