Divisive ’90s sequel that’s “surprisingly heartwarming” storms to top of Netflix trending chart

The long-awaited sequel from the ’90s, “Happy Gilmore 2,” which is unexpectedly heartfelt, has made a splash and taken over the Netflix trending list.

30 years on from the initial release, I’m thrilled to be talking about the long-awaited follow-up to the legendary 1996 comedy “Happy Gilmore”. Once again, it’s me stepping back into the shoes of the unconventional golfing sensation, Happy Gilmore.

Struggling financially, Happy is planning to re-enter the golfing arena after a long hiatus, intending to cover his daughter Vienna’s (Sunny Sandler) tuition fees at the Paris ballet academy.

Happy Gilmore isn’t finished with golf yet. Adam Sandler, the hot-headed golfer, aims for a return to the game to fulfill his child’s dream.

Moreover, actors such as Ben Stiller portraying Hal L, Christopher McDonald playing Shooter McGavin, and Julie Bowen assuming the role of Virginia Venit are reprising their parts from the 1996 movie.

In the 1996 film cast reprise their roles, with Ben Stiller as Hal L, Christopher McDonald as Shooter McGavin, and Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit being among them.

As reported by FlixPatrol, Happy Gilmore 2 is currently leading the pack as the most-viewed movie on Netflix globally, holding the top spot in their list of popular movies on the platform.

After its debut, the movie sparked a mixed response from reviewers. While some admired it for being “strong” and “humorous,” others criticized it for lacking “emotional depth.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d say it like this: “The jokes keep coming thick and fast, but Happy Gilmore 2 is an outrageously funny and unexpectedly heartfelt comedy. That’s the word from Fish Jelly Films.

In my perspective, this film lays a sturdy foundation for a potential sequel, carrying on the franchise in a way that’s not overly reliant on replicating each detail from the initial movie. Although it could have been more compact, I appreciate that it doesn’t forcefully echo every scene from the original, offering room for freshness and innovation instead.

In many instances, it effectively enhances the humor, as noted by IndieWire. This is particularly true because a significant portion of the comedy arises from Sandler’s performance, where he seemingly reprises his character Happy with an effortless grace that borders on being grizzled.

Slash Film found the sequel rather unimpressive, labeling it as a tiresome comedy with no genuine warmth or emotion.

Happy Gilmore 2 is now available to stream on Netflix.

The latest issue from Digital Spy, featuring the highly-anticipated “Oasis – Live in ’25,” is available! Grab a copy at your local newsagent or purchase it online for only £8.99. Enjoy the show!
