‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ trailer reveals blazing new chapter in Pandora

The “Avatar: Fire and Ash” trailer is finally here.

In the third part of James Cameron’s “Avatar” saga, we revisit the fantastical world of Pandora and meet a fresh Na’vi tribe – the Mangkwan Clan, or the Ash People. This powerful group is headed by the formidable Varang, portrayed by Oona Chaplin.

The Mangkwan Clan and its chief remain shrouded in mystery, but the trailer unveils their dwelling, charred by a volcanic explosion. The scenes suggest that Varang, adorned with a red headdress and capable of controlling fire, stands as an antagonist to Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and her kin. This is a marked contrast to the 2022 release “The Way of Water,” which immersed audiences in the subaquatic realm of the Metkayina Clan.

The trailer additionally depicts an intense conversation between Varang and Kiri (performed by Sigourney Weaver): “Here, your deity holds no power,” the passionate ruler, adorned with a red and black headpiece, declares.

In an interview with Empire (published in January), Cameron stated that Varang is the head of a group who have faced immense struggle. Her experiences have made her tough, he said. She’s prepared to perform actions that might seem wicked to us, just for their sake.

An exercise in Na’vi gazing, ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ will cure your moviegoing blues

Approximately thirteen years following the initial ‘Avatar,’ director James Cameron once more journeys to the distant moon of Pandora with a captivating, deeply personal sequel.

Beyond showcasing the Ash People, the trailer additionally offers glimpses into the Wind Traders, a nomadic Na’vi group who voyage on colossal ships guided by giant jellyfish-like creatures in the sky. It hints at scenes where Jake Sully, portrayed by Sam Worthington, is apprehended by humans in the movie.

Once again, Kate Winslet (as Ronal) and Jack Champion (in his Spider role) rejoin the group. Also, joining the cast is David Thewlis, portraying Peylak – the leader of the Wind Traders.

“Following a gap of three years since “Way of Water” (released in 2019) and sixteen years after the original, we have “Fire and Ash.” The first two movies were recognized with best picture nominations at the Oscars, while “Way of Water” was the top-grossing film in 2022. However, director Cameron has hinted that the upcoming third movie could offer unexpected twists for fans who have followed its predecessors.”

In this movie, we aimed to avoid a black-and-white, oversimplified narrative. Instead, we’re striving to move past the stereotype where ‘humans are always wrong and Na’vi are always right’.

On December 19th, I’ll be excitedly heading to the theaters for the release of “Fire and Ash.” Looking further ahead, there’s more excitement in store, with two additional installments expected on December 21st, 2029, and December 19th, 2031.
