Outlander: Blood Of My Blood Stars Talk That Time Paparazzi Almost Spoiled The Show’s Biggest Twist And Starting Season 2 Early
I can hardly contain my excitement as I eagerly anticipate the return of the captivating world of “Outlander” to our small screens, slated for 2025. The premiere of the prequel spinoff, titled “Blood of My Blood“, promises a unique perspective on the love stories of characters who will eventually become Claire’s (Caitriona Balfe) parents, Julia Moriston (Hermione Corfield) and Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine), as well as Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) future parents, Brian Fraser (Jamie Roy) and Ellen MacKenzie (Harriet Slater).
At first glance, the premise seemed simple enough… until I caught a glimpse of the trailer that shattered any notion of straightforwardness by hinting at a mind-bending twist: Julia and Henry may just find themselves traveling through time and potentially crossing paths with Brian and Ellen! What a tantalizing teaser for what promises to be an enthralling journey!
I had the good fortune to have a conversation with the cast of “Outlander: Blood of My Blood” during San Diego Comic-Con 2025, which included actors portraying younger versions of significant characters from “Outlander.” They shared insights about the unexpected twist that got leaked by paparazzi and the early announcement of Season 2’s renewal.
Papparazzi Caught Photos Of Time-Traveling Julia
One intriguing revelation that sparked discussions among “Outlander” fans is hinted in the trailer, as it suggests a deviation from the usual 18th-century and 20th-century love story narratives. Instead, Julia’s character seems destined to traverse the standing stones, an event reminiscent of Claire’s life-altering experience, to meet Jamie’s future parents in the past. During my interview with Hermione Corfield at SDCC, I couldn’t help but inquire about the difficulties she faced while filming “Blood of My Blood” during the first season. She replied:
In a certain instance, I couldn’t claim I had time-traveled; instead, people would inquire, and I would respond by discussing my character, specifically stating that she works in the reduction office. To be precise, there was nothing more I could share about the matter.
Given that there were numerous pre-released press photos featuring 18th-century Scottish characters, but far fewer of Julia and Henry from the 20th century, it was quickly apparent that the time travel plotline was integral to Blood of My Blood. The series did a commendable job of maintaining secrecy regarding spoilers, as the time travel element seems to be just as significant here as in the original Outlander. Hermione Corfield shared her experience filming exterior scenes for the 18th-century segments while paparazzi were present.
The initial time spent outside… they cautioned us, “It’s essential to carry umbrellas with you as you stroll, to shield yourself from being photographed.” Following their advice, we wandered around under our umbrellas for quite a while this morning. We decided to fold up our umbrellas, only to find three photographers strategically positioned and ready to snap shots. [laughs] They stayed put throughout the entire filming of the scene, as they knew exactly where to position themselves.
If those paparazzi photos spread online following their capture, they certainly didn’t reach everyone! I, for one, hadn’t come across them, and judging by the reactions on social media after the trailer launch, it appears many Outlander fans were just as taken aback as I was to see Claire’s mother traversing the stones that would ultimately claim her daughter decades down the line. It seems the major time travel twist has largely remained intact.

The Cast Is Already Working On Season 2
Starz swiftly moved forward with renewing the series Blood of My Blood, ordering a second season even before the first one debuts in August. Filming for this new season began in late June, utilizing sets previously used by Outlander. As I had an opportunity to chat with Sam Retford (as Dougal MacKenzie), Seamus McLean Ross (Colum MacKenzie), and Rory Alexander (Murtagh), I couldn’t help but inquire about their experience starting on Season 2 before Season 1 has even aired. Retford shared his thoughts on this unique situation.
We invested a significant amount of time perfecting our approach for Season 1, through an intensive boot camp. To think, we began casually exploring this project in 2023, and now here we are. Reflecting back to that time, we can see how long we labored over these characters, pouring countless hours into their development. The fruits of our labor were finally evident when the anticipation built up, only to be relieved as we realized our efforts weren’t in vain – it actually worked, and we accomplished what we set out to do.
Transitioning from the “floating” phase in 2023, straight into occupying Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con following Outlander‘s panel unveiling the initial Season 8 footage, is undeniably a grandiose way to illustrate the immense excitement building up for the climax! Although fans have a bit of a wait until they can witness the two-episode premiere, the cast has already had a sneak peek at some of the first season. Sam Heughan expressed:
We’ve enjoyed several episodes from it, and it truly looks amazing. As a fan of such narratives, I can’t wait to delve deeper into that world. Starting Season 2 gives us the freedom to relax and simply enjoy exploring these characters. It feels like we can just play around with them, have fun, and savor the experience.
One advantage for the actors portraying Dougal, Colum, and Murtagh is that they don’t have to be entwined in the primary time-travel storyline like the two couples; however, these characters are immune to being written off the show. In other words, their survival on the series is ensured by Outlander, allowing for a deeper exploration of their stories during Season 2, as Seamus McLean Ross put it.
In Season 2, we delve further into the complex inner workings of these characters, providing a more detailed insight into their psyches, rather than just the surface-level situations presented in the series.
Right now, we’re getting closer by the day as Season 1 approaches on Starz this Friday, August 8 at 8 p.m. ET. Coincidentally, this date is almost exactly eleven years since the debut of Outlander in 2014 – a promising omen for the show. Meanwhile, the original series will bring back Claire and Jamie for their final season around 2026. Keep an eye on TopMob for updates from the cast of Outlander: Blood of My Blood soon!
