Outlander’s Caitríona Balfe joins “fresh” new British period drama adaptation

As a gaming aficionado, I’m thrilled to share that the captivating Outlander star, Caitríona Balfe, has hopped aboard for a brand-new take on Jane Austen’s timeless masterpiece, Sense and Sensibility. Can’t wait to see her bring these iconic characters to life!

Last month, Focus Features officially introduced a new period drama penned by Diana Reid and helmed by Georgia Oakley. The principal characters, Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, will be portrayed by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles respectively.

On Monday, July 21st, the production team shared new information: Filming has officially begun, and we’re thrilled to announce that Caitriona Balfe is now part of our talented cast alongside Frank Dillane, George MacKay, Herbert Nordrum, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, and Fiona Shaw.

Balfe, famous for her portrayal as Claire Fraser in Outlander, is taking on the part of Mrs Dashwood, the on-screen mother of Edgar-Jones and Creed-Miles. In the cast, Shaw, known from Killing Eve, will be playing Mrs Jennings.

In this adaptation, MacKay, famously recognized for his roles in “1917” and “Femme,” is set to embody Edward Ferrars, whereas Dillane will take on the role of Marianne’s love interest, John Willoughby. It has also been confirmed that Breathnach will portray Margaret, the third Dashwood sister, and Nordrum will bring Colonel Brandon to life.

In 1811, Austen’s novel, which is now considered a timeless masterpiece, was characterized as an investigation into themes of “self-control and intense emotion.” Focus Features, the production company, described their latest adaptation as a contemporary and innovative interpretation of this highly respected piece of literature.

In 1995, Emma Thompson both wrote the screenplay and played Elinor for a film adaptation of the book. Directed by Ang Lee, this historical drama also featured Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, and Hugh Grant in its cast.

In the near future, Balfe is set to immerse himself in the world of 18th-century England. However, before that, he was recently cast alongside Rami Malek in “The Amateur,” an action-packed thriller. This story revolves around a CIA cryptographer who turns rogue after the murder of his wife.

During an interview with Digital Spy, Balfe expressed a unique sensation she experienced while filming in Marseille, saying: “The location where Rami and I filmed the scenes at Inquiline’s house was a charming small fishing village that seemed incredibly secluded and far-off.

As a gamer, stepping into that place was like slipping away from the world. The environment was so immersive, it felt like it had a life of its own, and I sincerely hope our future adventures continue to unfold in real-life locations rather than being confined to green screens.
