Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards Just Set Up Marvel’s Most Dangerous Villain (And It’s Not Doctor Doom)
In “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” viewers were introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of Mr. Fantastic, and Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of the character could potentially lay the groundwork for a malevolent character to emerge. Coming up next is Avengers: Doomsday, which will not only see Marvel’s First Family interact with the rest of the universe but also introduce the formidable villain, Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. Now that “First Steps” has been released, some dialogue within the film may hint at the arrival of another nefarious character.

Following their confrontation with Galactus, the Fantastic Four regroup at home, brainstorming ways to safeguard their world without endangering Franklin. In a moment of contemplation, Reed ponders the extreme option of surrendering his son to Galactus. However, he hastens to reassure Sue Storm, who’s clearly upset by this suggestion, that such drastic measures are merely fleeting thoughts in his mind and not something he would ever seriously consider implementing.
Demonstrating that Reed entertains malicious and warped ideas but avoids acting upon them might subtly foreshadow or introduce a character known as the “Reed Variant” in Marvel Comics, who actually carries out such dark deeds. This alternate Reed Richards is commonly referred to as The Maker.
In the original comic series of the Ultimate universe, this character initially represents a benevolent version of Mr. Fantastic. However, as he experiences a string of personal tragedies, he transforms into a ruthless, calculating figure, no longer focused on solving the universe’s issues but rather on controlling it instead.
As a die-hard comics enthusiast, I can’t help but notice that the character Reed in this series seems to be laying some significant groundwork. This could hint at Marvel Studios setting up the stage for The Maker’s grand entrance in either ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ or ‘Secret Wars’. If true, it would be fascinating to see a fan-favorite hero transition into a villain, much like the comics. This theory aligns with whispers that Variants will serve as secondary antagonists in ‘Doomsday’, paving the way for The Maker to step into the limelight when ‘Secret Wars’ rolls around.
Under the direction of Matt Shakman, the film titled The Fantastic Four: First Steps steps out from the typical Marvel Cinematic Universe setting to introduce Reed Richards (played by Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). These four characters find themselves confronting the dangerous villain Galactus (Ralph Ineson), a being that consumes planets, along with his minion, Silver Surfer (portrayed by Julia Garner), who may have an exciting future within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Why The Maker Could Be Avengers’ Most Dangerous Villain Yet
If incorporated into their group, The Creator might become one of the toughest adversaries the Avengers will encounter. Given that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is soon to depict the Secret Wars storyline in its upcoming collaborative films, it’s quite possible that a malevolent Reed character could emerge.
In the 2015 comic series, invasions begin causing destruction across various universes. As a result, The Maker joins forces with the malevolent group known as the Cabal to proactively destroy other worlds in an attempt to safeguard the Ultimate universe. When the Multiverse disintegrates, the Cabal moves to Battleworld, which was recently created by Doctor Doom. In this new setting, The Maker is eventually compelled to collaborate with his own counterpart. However, their alliance crumbles when they reach Doom’s power source, at which point The Maker deceives Reed.
With the brilliant mind of Reed Richards, deep understanding of various Marvel characters, and an unyielding mental stance that considers no action taboo, The Maker poses a significant threat to the Avengers.
Despite suffering several losses, he consistently manages to resurface, such as his latest attempt to build the new Ultimate realm. It’s been widely debated that Secret Wars will unite various aspects of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), with the Russo brothers hinting that this event will serve as a fresh “starting point.”
In this hypothetical scenario, if we create a fresh universe from Phase 7, and The Maker takes charge as its ruler, much like how he shaped the latest Ultimate universe, it could introduce a new dominant antagonist. Given the emotional bond audiences already share with him due to his past actions, this character would likely be a complex villain that fans will either love to despise or despise to admire. With Pedro Pascal portraying him, such a role is bound to captivate viewers.
