Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne’s love story: What the 18-year-old really thought of the young rocker when they met and how the ‘soulmates’ endured all despite the odds
Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne transformed into an extraordinary A-list couple, defying expectations, and their love persisted through numerous obstacles they encountered together.
For almost five decades, the pair steadfastly stayed committed, supporting one another through Ozzy’s battles with addiction, unfaithfulness, and health obstacles.
Sharon remained resolute by her spouse’s side until his demise at the age of 76 on Tuesday, offering him comfort during his illness and even attending his last-ever Black Sabbath performance, which took place only a few weeks prior to his passing.
The couple didn’t experience love at first sight; they initially crossed paths when Sharon was 18 and Ozzy was 22. However, according to Sharon, her feelings towards the musician weren’t particularly affectionate during their initial encounter.
In a conversation with Dan Rather for AXS TV in 2017, Sharon shared that initially she felt apprehensive towards Ozzy Osbourne and the Black Sabbath band members, which included Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward.
Their initial encounter occurred during a time when Black Sabbath was contemplating management under Sharon’s father, Don Arden, a renowned talent agent. It was later in 1974 that he officially signed the band with him.

In response to being queried about the instantaneous nature of my feelings upon our initial encounter, I confessed, ‘Absolutely not, far from it! My first impression was more along the lines of “Oh my, gaze upon their peculiarity” as they presented an unusual ensemble of features and hair.’
Previously, I was accustomed to working with American artists who were exceptionally polished, well-organized, and always had a pleasant scent about them.
However, all of a sudden, a group of individuals entered who appeared quite hairy and hailed from the Northern part of England. Their appearance and attire were unlike anything I had ever encountered before, which left me feeling quite apprehensive towards them.
Yet, Sharon admitted that she started appreciating Black Sabbath after attending their London concert that evening. It wasn’t until much later in time that a romantic relationship developed between her and Ozzy.
‘I was so in awe of what I was seeing, again, I hadn’t seen anything like that,’ she admitted.
Upon witnessing its electrifying nature and uniqueness, I found myself utterly astonished. That moment sparked my curiosity about Black Sabbath.
1979 marked a turning point for Ozzy when he was let go from Black Sabbath because of his unpredictable behavior and struggles with drug use. Interestingly, his wife Sharon stepped in to manage him professionally, which put pressure on her bond with her father Don, who had also been dismissed by the band.
In the “On The Osbournes” podcast, Ozzy reminisced about a time when he was let go from Black Sabbath. He felt defeated, thinking ‘I’m finished’, but then Sharon offered to manage him, leaving him wondering ‘Does she even want me?’

At that moment, sparks started to ignite as Sharon shared her feelings about being drawn to his humor and vulnerability, attributing those qualities as the reason they’ve stayed connected throughout the years.
In 1980, our collaboration began and continued until it transformed into something different, as she explained to Dan Rather during their conversation in 2017.
He had a knack for being both amusing and sharp-witted, yet he showed an openness that bordered on vulnerability. To me, this made him the most hilarious and endearing individual I’ve encountered, as his vulnerability was captivating. It was this quality that drew me to him.
During a visit to San Francisco alongside musician Gary Moore, their relationship deepened, as Ozzy had once confessed his attempts to secretly enter Sharon’s room when they were apart.
Last year on the family podcast, Sharon mentioned that Ozzy struggled to locate her room because she had reserved it under a different name, making it difficult for him to find her there.
In a humorous manner, Ozzy mentioned, “Last night, I almost said, ‘May I come and watch your TV?’ because that used to be my way of trying to impress someone.
Yet, the journey wasn’t smooth as Ozzy was wedded to Thelma Riley, a union that produced Jessica and Louis, while also adopting her son Elliot. Unfortunately, their marriage ended in divorce in 1982, primarily because of Ozzy’s struggles with alcohol addiction.
Sharon stated about that period: “It was challenging since Ozzy was already married with two kids. After their separation – she was the one who divorced him – I would have acted similarly at the time. Consequently, he took everything he owned and left it with her, which was the appropriate decision.

When questioned about being the cause of their separation, Sharon clarified: ‘No, it wasn’t me. The alcohol became too much for her to handle, and I understand that.’
In 1982, when the couple got married following his divorce, Sharon recounted their initial state of having few resources. Ozzy was grappling with financial difficulties after being dismissed from his band, while Sharon was burdened by tax liabilities from Don’s management company, which she oversaw.
Regardless of the challenges they faced, Ozzy frequently refers to Sharon as his “twin soul,” expressing his belief that their union was predestined.
For a long time, I felt drawn towards Sharon. We’d cross paths at airports and music festivals, and her laughter was contagious. She was always entertaining, he shared on the Osbournes podcast in 2024.
‘We were meant to be together, looking back, we were meant to be.’
He expressed passionately: “Sharon feels akin to my soulmate. At times, I adore her deeply; at other times, I don’t feel the love; I get angry with her, become infatuated with her, feel intensely jealous of her, and even experience moments when I want to harm her.
Despite every challenge along the way, at the close of each day, my affection for her surpasses everything else in this world. Life without her seems unimaginable and undesirable. My love for her has grown beyond measure, and our journey together, while bumpy, remains significant.
Over the course of their union, they’ve faced numerous challenges, ranging from unfaithfulness to ailments, yet they’ve persisted and managed to remain united. Ozzy has frequently expressed admiration for his partner’s unwavering support during his periods of poor health.

Over the past five years, it’s been nothing short of a living nightmare for me, and I’ve been quite difficult as I tried to get better. But through all this, my family has been absolutely amazing. He shared this sentiment last year.
My spouse has put in a tremendous effort to aid me in regaining my footing, and my children have been wonderful too.
Over the last five years, Ozzy has gone through seven surgical procedures, one of which was his fourth spinal surgery in the year 2023. Since 2003, he has been dealing with Parkinson’s disease; however, he chose to keep this private until 2020 when he made it public.
On the Fourth of July, 1982, Ozzy and Sharon exchanged wedding vows in Hawaii. During their union, they were blessed with three children: Aimee (aged 41), Kelly (aged 40), and Jack (aged 39).
Throughout the 2000s, they recorded their family experiences for their reality TV program, “The Osbournes.” However, their eldest child, Aimee, decided not to appear on the show.
In July 2002, Ozzy stood by Sharon as she faced her fight against colon cancer, during which she had a significant part of her colon surgically removed.
Fortunately, Sharon received a clean bill of health and hasn’t had any recurrence of cancer since then, despite having a prophylactic double mastectomy following her discovery of a genetic mutation that increased her chances of contracting the illness.
One particularly challenging time for the couple came about when Sharon found out that Ozzy was involved romantically with his hairstylist, Michelle Pugh, back in 2016.

In my role as a lifestyle advisor, I might put it this way: Overwhelmed by the crushing weight of heartbreaking news, I found myself reaching for an escape, ultimately leading me to make a tragic choice – taking an excessive amount of drugs – before walking away from a long-standing marital commitment.
Yet, several months passed, and she chose to pardon him openly. She acknowledged that she was still deeply in love with him, finding it difficult to envision her life apart from him. Consequently, she was focusing on restoring the trust they once shared.
Later on, Ozzy expressed remorse for his infidelity and lamented the potential loss of his wife due to his ‘excessive’ behavior, voicing his sadness in the process.
In his conversation with British GQ, he admitted that he’s engaged in actions beyond the ordinary in his past. Specifically, he regrets infidelity in his marriage. Now, he no longer engages in such behavior.
‘I received a harsh wake-up call, and I’m grateful she chose to stay with me. I’m not proud of the situation. In fact, I was angry at myself. However, I ended up hurting her deeply.’
Throughout the later stages of Ozzy’s life, Sharon tirelessly stood by his side, providing care during numerous significant health challenges, among which were his battles with Parkinson’s disease.
At the “Back To The Beginning” concert on July 5, it was Sharon who stood beside Ozzy as he made his final performance on stage, bidding farewell to his fans.
The performance at Villa Park in Birmingham marked the most recent occasion when Ozzy played alongside his Black Sabbath bandmates since 2005, attracting a massive crowd of enthusiastic fans.

After intending to continue producing music following his retirement from live performances, Ozzy unexpectedly passed away just three weeks after his final concert, leaving the music industry in sorrow.
On a deeply sorrowful note, I’m compelled to share the heart-wrenching news that fell upon us today, July 22nd. My cherished idol, the immortal Ozzy Osbourne, took his final bow this morning. The sadness I feel can hardly be put into words.
‘He was in the company of his loved ones, basking in affection. At present, we kindly request that everyone honors our family’s need for seclusion. This includes Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee, and Louis.’
