Dawn O’Porter admits she is ‘always broke’ and lives ‘pay cheque to pay cheque’ despite marriage to Hollywood actor Chris O’Dowd
Dawn O’Porter, known for being married to a well-known and affluent Hollywood comedian, has confessed that she personally faces financial difficulties and finds it challenging to manage her finances.
In a recent turn of events, the 46-year-old author and TV host, who married Chris O’Dowd from Bridesmaids back in 2012, admitted that despite working tirelessly to pay bills and rent, her bank card was recently refused.
In my experience, I find myself living from one paycheck to another, scarcely managing to make ends meet. It seems as though I’m constantly running out of funds, and just recently, my card was declined – leaving me puzzled and wondering when this financial struggle might finally subside.
Last summer, Chris and they (Dawn and their two kids) spent eight years in Los Angeles but then moved back to London with their son Art, who was eleven at the time, and daughter Valentine, who was eight.
In an appearance on the White Wine Question Time podcast, she clarified that despite her husband Chris being a prominent actor, neither of them consider themselves as celebrities.

It seems that if I were a celebrity, I’d earn a significant amount for tasks unrelated to my main work or not contributing much to it. However, this isn’t my reality. My profession is writing, and occasionally, I use Instagram to post small ads just to cover my living expenses.
At the time when Dawn became widely recognized due to her role in the 2007 BBC documentary titled “Super Slim Me,” during which she lost weight to a size zero through extreme dieting methods, she happened to encounter Chris. This meeting took place as Dawn’s own career was experiencing a significant decline.
She expressed that everything seemed to crumble, as her TV career came to an end, leaving her struggling financially. Overwhelmed with sadness, she felt utterly defeated, with no self-assurance left. Uncertain about the future, she pondered on what steps to take next. She had recently encountered Chris, who was climbing up in life. In a moment of contemplation, she thought that perhaps her role was merely as his girlfriend and nothing more.
As a lifestyle aficionado, I had the thrilling debut on the red carpet at the 2011 premiere of Bridesmaids, which became a global sensation and launched Chris into international stardom.
She mused, “I’ve often assumed that finding myself in such a situation would be the result of actions I’ve earned.

As Chris’s career took flight, Dawn faced a challenge locating her niche; initially, she grappled with it in Hollywood, later back in London.
In the bustling cityscape of Los Angeles, I found myself yearning for change. Turning to my partner Chris, I expressed my desire to return to London, where I hoped to rekindle my career aspirations. After a brief sojourn back home, I attended numerous meetings with TV production companies in London. To my delight, these encounters were fruitful, and I began to see my career goals becoming a reality once more.
In a previous stint, I ran my own show on Channel 4. When they’d ask, “What would you like to work on?”, I’d reply, “I want to continue doing what I do.” However, it seemed no one was keen on hiring me for future projects.
Previously, she was a regular contributor to Stylist magazine. However, she was let go from her position there. In her own words, “I was fired.” Despite having her own show on Channel 4, as her career seemed to wane, it appears the powers-that-be at the magazine may have felt she wasn’t as captivating as before.
The decisive strike shattered my self-assurance; I tumbled, utterly defeated, as I had always believed that writing would serve as my salvation.
In a heart-pounding moment, I received an email from an editor, a beacon of hope, who’d delved into my columns and recognized a hidden potential within me. They extended an invitation that sent shivers down my spine – a chance to venture into the uncharted territories of fiction writing.
Dawn clarified, “She didn’t know that I had been let go, but then she suggested that I could write fantastic fiction for young adults. That remark struck me as the moment I had been preparing for all my life.
2013 saw her receiving a two-book contract. Her initial publication was “Paper Aeroplanes,” a novel that unfolded the story of an emotionally charged female friendship, which bore a resemblance to her own Guernsey upbringing.

After achieving best-seller status, she acknowledges that the work never ends and her earnings can vary. Translated differently: In terms of being an artist rather than a celebrity, there’s always something more to do, and it’s never a smooth ride.
She added that she’s thrilled to be back in London now.
She expressed that the city feels deeply familiar to her, and she’s thrilled to have returned. While the move might have been a more challenging adjustment period for the children and Chris, she is completely smitten with it.
I find myself following the news and observing current events in the U.S., but it feels like an endless, distressing film that I’d rather not be involved with at this time.
Although London has its problems too, there’s something about the sense of security that I find compelling. In America, I constantly felt uneasy and even hesitated to take my children to the park.
‘There were gunshots. And every morning on the local news, someone else has been shot.
While we were at the school, we received a warning about an active shooter in the area, prompting me to say, “I just can’t handle this any longer.
As a devoted follower, I can relate to her sentiment. Life in LA felt increasingly isolating, especially with my partner frequently absent due to filming commitments in Atlanta for nearly eight months each year. It often felt as if he wasn’t there at all, leaving me to ponder, “Why am I still here?
Despite the hectic nature of the relocation – ‘We struggled with getting our children enrolled in local schools, had trouble finding a place to settle down, and managing five pets added to the stress’ – she asserts that it was the best choice for the entire family.
