Starfleet Academy’s Tatiana Maslany Told Us What It’s Like Working With Paul Giamatti, But I’m More Jazzed About How Her Sharing Her Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Fandom

In her acting career that’s already seen success from roles in “Orphan Black” and “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law”, Tatiana Maslany is set to join another notable project within the genre. She will recur on the future “Star Trek” TV series, “Starfleet Academy,” premiering in 2026. Notably, Paul Giamatti, who portrays the main antagonist on the show, is one of her co-stars. In an interview with TopMob, Maslany discussed working with Giamatti, but what truly excited me was when she expressed her love for “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” a series that ranks among my favorites within the franchise.

What Tatiana Maslany Said About Acting With Paul Giamatti In Starfleet Academy

Sarah El-Mahmoud had a chat with Maslany at San Diego Comic-Con regarding her upcoming film Keeper, slated for release in November 2025. When the topic of Starfleet Academy arose during their conversation, the actress shared her thoughts on working alongside the actor who will appear in Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, premiering this September.

As a fan, working alongside Paul Giamatti felt like a dream come true! He’s got an infectious energy that makes him feel like a big kid on set. His playfulness adds so much fun to the atmosphere, and it’s fascinating to see him thrive in genres where he can let loose. It was truly exhilarating to be able to push boundaries and explore character depths that I normally wouldn’t, and that experience was simply amazing!

Although we’re yet to discover the roles played by Tatiana Maslany and Paul Giamatti in Starfleet Academy, Entertainment Weekly has revealed that Giamatti had a choice among five characters when offered for the show. It’s pleasing to learn that Maslany enjoyed working with him and felt challenged to extend her acting capabilities beyond her typical film and TV projects. This information only increases my anticipation to find out how Maslany’s character will contribute to the upcoming Star Trek series.

Why Tatiana Maslany Likes Star Trek: Deep Space Nine So Much

Prior to landing the role in “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy”, Tatiana Maslany was already an enthusiast of the franchise. Yet, securing the part motivated her to watch “Deep Space Nine” from start to finish for the first time. It didn’t take long for her to develop a deep affection for the series. As Maslany shared:

Or in a more conversational style:

Tatiana Maslany, before getting cast in “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy”, was already a fan of the franchise. But when she got the part, she decided to watch “Deep Space Nine” for the first time. It didn’t take long for her to become deeply invested and passionate about the series. As Maslany herself put it:

I developed a deep affection for Deep Space Nine as it offered me a fresh perspective on the world. Having watched The Original Series and movies, and with my husband being a devoted Trekkie, I decided to explore DS9. In a matter of three to four months, I finished seven seasons, becoming completely captivated! I’m thrilled by its insights into politics and society, finding it remarkably progressive. Deep Space Nine seems to be forward-thinking, bravely addressing complex issues using veiled allegories. There’s a wealth of material to explore in DS9, and it’s also simply entertaining.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, often overlooked within the Star Trek series, deserves more attention. I suggest those who haven’t watched it yet to give it a try by subscribing to Paramount+. From 1993 to 1999, this show aired and while initially following a format similar to the earlier series, The Original Series and The Next Generation, it later evolved, venturing into complex storylines long before this became common on TV. It’s heartening to see that even renowned actress Tatiana Maslany appreciated the show so much that she managed to binge-watch it in a few months, praising its thoughtful exploration of political themes.

It’s not necessarily that Starfleet Academy will emulate the atmosphere of Deep Space Nine, but fans of the latter show can rejoice as they share a common favorite in Maslany. Regarding Starfleet Academy, stay tuned to TopMob for updates on its upcoming developments.
