Avengers: Doomsday Directors Want Fans to Watch Fantastic Four First Steps for This Reason
The directors of “Avengers: Doomsday” are sounding the call for the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), urging fans that it is essential they watch “Fantastic Four: First Steps.” Although this film takes place in a different reality from the main MCU, Matt Shakman’s Fantastic Four reboot is said to include important elements that connect to the upcoming “Avengers” movie. This is especially significant since “First Steps” represents the last major solo Marvel Studios production (excluding Sony and Marvel’s “Spider-Man 4”) before “Avengers 5.
Due to this, the directors of Avengers: Doomsday, Joe and Anthony Russo, have shared a sort of powerful public service announcement aimed at fans. They urge viewers to watch Fantastic Four as it serves as an excellent introduction for the upcoming Avengers movie.
On their individual Instagram account, the director pair advised, “Check out [Fantastic Four] this weekend.” It’s worth it just for the extra scenes shown during the credits.
Massive kudos to Matt Shakman, the whole team including cast and crew! The Fantastic Four movie is terrific; don’t miss it this weekend. Plus, make sure you stick around after the end credits!
Similar to Thunderbolts preceding it, the Russo Brothers are set to direct the post-credits scenes for Fantastic Four, hinting that these events will pave the way for their involvement in Marvel’s 2026 team-up.
In a recent chat, director Matt Shakman shared that the Russo brothers had significant involvement in the creation of Fantastic Four. They even filmed some scenes for the stingers while working on the continuation of Doomsday’s production, as reported by Comicbook.
As a dedicated movie critic, I found myself deeply immersed in the creative process while working on this film. The team behind it was exceptionally hands-on, frequently dropping by our sets to observe scenes unfold and establish a connection with their characters. This dedication extended beyond the current project, as they aimed to nurture these characters for future films, ensuring they were treated justly and authentically.
Working on a Marvel production feels much like running a relay race: each member takes the baton, runs with it as passionately and swiftly as possible during their assigned leg of the race, then passes it on to the next runner. In this instance, I handed over the baton to Joe and Anthony, confident that they would carry it forward with equal vigor and skill. This transition is always exhilarating; it’s the essence of collaboration in filmmaking at its finest.
The upcoming movie “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” hitting theaters on July 25, will pave the way for “Avengers: Doomsday” in December, where we’ll see a convergence of notable Marvel teams such as the Fantastic Four from “First Steps,” the Avengers, the Thunderbolts, and classic X-Men heroes from Fox. They’ll join forces to face off against Robert Downey Jr.’s character, Doctor Doom.
How Fantastic Four Sets Up Avengers: Doomsday?
Doomsday” can be thought of as the main course, while “Fantastic Four: First Steps” serves as an intro or starter. The upcoming Marvel Studios’ Fantastic Four reboot is the last standalone film before Avengers: Doomsday that will hit theaters, so it logically needs to set up the 2026 team-up event.
For the most part, this comes down to the movie’s post-credits scenes.
Initially, viewers caught a glimpse of “Avengers: Doomsday” towards the end of “Thunderbolts“, since that film concluded with its named team witnessing an interdimensional rocket carrying the distinctive “4” emblem of the Fantastic Four entering our solar system.
In their upcoming scenes during the credits, the Fantastic Four are expected to hint at Doctor Doom’s arrival and suggest how they fit into the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s multiverse narrative once more.
In a scene filmed specifically on the set of “Doomsday,” an unidentified figure cloaked in mystery secretly abducts newborn Franklin Richards. To avoid spoilers, we won’t reveal the kidnapper’s identity here (for more details, check out our spoiler-filled post-credits scene analysis for “Fantastic Four”).
This arrangement appears to initiate the plotline for “Avengers 5” as Marvel’s Original Family becomes integral to the larger MCU narrative. With Franklin out of the picture, Reed Richards, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, and the rest of the Fantastic Four are compelled to act, venturing through various universes to rescue their latest teammate.
