MasterChef Australia viewers up in arms over contestant Laura Sharrad’s ‘disgusting and unhygienic’ act
Fans of MasterChef Australia are expressing strong opinions following an apparent breach of a kitchen rule by two stars during Tuesday’s broadcast.
At Melbourne’s Vue De Monde, the opportune moment arose while contestants were readying their dishes for the service immunity challenge.
Contestant Laura Sharrad, aged 29 and hailing from Adelaide, was observed blowing on some tantalizing wagyu steaks. This action sparked concerned remarks from viewers across social media platforms.
One spectator grumbled, “Why is Laura puffing air onto the steak like that?” Another commented, “Laura, please stop breathing on your food.
Furthermore, for added theatricality, it appears that Executive Chef Hugh Allen repeated the action – he cooled down his dish by gently breathing on it.

It’s perfectly okay if you’re just preparing meals for yourself, but it’s not suitable if you plan on serving that food to others.
It’s just not appealing to me to have another person’s spit mixed into my meal. It seems unsanitary and unpleasant.
Another viewer concurred with the criticism in the previous discussion by stating, ‘It seemed unusual that nobody warned Laura earlier, but here comes Hugh doing exactly the same thing.’
‘All that saliva Laura is blowing over those Wagyu cubes,’ said another MasterChef enthusiast.
Most viewers complaining about the ‘food blowing’ saw it as a hygiene risk.
One fan on the thread expressed their displeasure by saying, ‘I won’t eat anything that the chef has repeatedly burned. That’s a big no-no, and I’m surprised nobody warned Laura about it. But then Hugh also burnt something. Ugh.’
It’s not the first time viewers have had a whinge about ‘kitchen crimes’ this season.
During May, Theo Loizou faced criticism from fans after they observed him sampling his dish using a spoon, only to put the same spoon back into the pan to stir the sauce.
The blunder sparked a storm of outrage among viewers, with some expressing their disapproval on social media towards the beloved character for neglecting the series’ rigorous cleanliness code.
A viewer commented on Reddit, “Did anyone else see Theo sampling his puree and subsequently returning the same spoon to the pot?” or simply, “A Reddit user pointed out that Theo tried his puree with the same spoon he put back in the pot.

Surely, I can’t be alone in noticing this! It’s such a regular occurrence for me that it really frustrates me when contestants do it. This is one of my biggest annoyances.
A different spectator asserted that the contestants on the cooking program were frequently engaging in the questionable practice known as ‘double-dipping’.
I can’t help but notice this trend – everyone seems to be sporting an open or face-framing hairstyle! It’s just… it gives me such a ‘ick’ feeling, the lack of hygiene associated with it.” (First person perspective as an observant and slightly concerned fan.)
As a devoted enthusiast, I’ve delved into understanding the techniques that skilled chefs employ when sampling food during the preparation process in a professional kitchen setting.
‘One viewer on Reddit pointed out something they observe annually on MasterChef Australia, which they believe is mostly because many contestants haven’t worked in a real restaurant before.’
Before filming commences for MasterChef Australia in 2024, as stated by contestant Sumeet Saigal, the participants are made aware of the required hygiene regulations.
She informed Yahoo Lifestyle last June that you are consistently advised on cleanliness and regularly reminded as well.
She mentioned that the guidelines stipulate avoiding ‘double-dipping’, not using a spoon more than once, and immediately discarding any food that lands on the floor.
