In a matter of days, we’ll see the debut of “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” As anticipation builds, fans are reminiscing about the initial reboot of the franchise back in 2015. The second installment of this venture was eventually scrapped, leaving everyone surprised. So, what led to the cancellation of “Fantastic Four 2” following its rework?
* The production for the sequel to the initial reboot of the superhero franchise has been called off.
* This decision was made due to various reasons such as budget constraints, creative differences, or changes within the studio.
* Fans who were looking forward to seeing the continuation of the series will have to wait to see what happens next with this beloved universe.
Why Fox canceled Fantastic Four 2 before Disney acquisition
It appears that Fox chose not to proceed with Fantastic Four 2, likely because the initial film didn’t perform as well as expected. This decision was made prior to the Disney acquisition.
The initial installment debuted on August 7, 2015, marking a fresh start for the Fantastic Four movie franchise. However, it fell short of meeting its potential, receiving widespread unfavorable criticism from critics and currently holding an IMDb rating of 4.3 out of 10 and 9% on Rotten Tomatoes. Furthermore, the film underperformed at the box office, earning a total of $168 million globally against a production cost of $120 million. Consequently, the superhero movie resulted in a financial loss of around $80 to $100 million for the studio.
Additionally, the Fantastic Four earned awards such as Worst Director and Worst Picture. Director Josh Trank also voiced his dissatisfaction with the film, attributing the poor outcome to studio intervention. Regardless of its failure, producer Simon Kinberg advocated for a follow-up and set the release date at June 9, 2017. However, no further news emerged, leaving fans disheartened about the prospect of a sequel.
Gradually, the sequel to Fantastic Four (2) was no longer listed among 20th Century Fox’s future projects. Later on, in 2019, The Walt Disney Company purchased the studio, which left the movie’s fate uncertain. Marvel Studios subsequently assumed control over the Fantastic Four franchise and announced a fresh start for the film in July of 2019. After making several adjustments, the studio disclosed the title and cast of the new reboot in 2024. The team wrapped up filming by November of that year.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps will release on July 25, 2025, in theatres.
