A Smurfs Spinoff? I Had To Ask About Mama Poot And Ken’s Hint Of Romance, And I Was Not Disappointed In Natasha Lyonne’s Answer
SPOILERS are ahead for Smurfs.
The newly released Smurfs film boasts a fresh ensemble of gifted performers, tasked with reimagining Peyo’s iconic creation for today’s youth. An unexpected aspect I found intriguing was the suggestion of romance between Smurf Ken and Mama Poot, the chief Snooterpoot. During an interview with Natasha Lyonne, the voice actress behind Mama Poot, she expressed enthusiasm about the possibility of a spin-off focusing on this unique relationship.
Natasha Lyonne Had The Sweetest Response To Her Smurfs Romance
During an interview with TopMob, Natasha Lyonne discussed her experience working on the film ‘Smurfs’. Similar to many actors in animated movies, she often doesn’t have the opportunity to interact with her well-known co-stars. In the case of ‘Smurfs’, Lyonne is eagerly awaiting a text from Rihanna since she plays the latest version of Smurfette. Regarding rumors of a romantic connection between her character and Ken, Lyonne shared her thoughts on the matter.
To put it simply, let’s focus on the main plot first. Naturally, I’m curious about its conclusion, as you never truly understand a story’s direction until it unfolds on the big or small screen.
In the cartoon film, Nick Offerman’s character, Ken, appears quite content following his encounter with Mama Poot. There’s a feeling that these two characters have met multiple times prior. At one point, Ken says “We’ll always have Paris,” hinting at their past, before later expressing his love for her throughout the movie. As Lyonne went on:
It’s fantastic to express my admiration for Nick Offerman! Today, I had the pleasure of spending the whole day with him, and let me tell you, he’s truly an exceptional individual – genuinely kind and charming. To be honest, I’m quite close with Aubrey [Plaza] and Amy [Poehler], but today was my first real chance to get to know Nick. He’s simply a wonderful person, making him a joy to be around. Given this experience, I can’t help but hope for a spinoff featuring him!
It’s quite surprising that Natasha Lyonne and Nick Offerman haven’t collaborated earlier, given their mutual connections. They got acquainted during the promotion of Smurfs, and they share some friends in common as Natasha is personally acquainted with several members of the Parks and Recreation cast. However, their first joint project was Smurfs. As Lyonne expressed, she admires Offerman so much that she’s eager to delve deeper into the backstory of their potential characters, Mama Poot and Ken, through a possible spinoff.

Could Another Smurfs Movie Happen?
Considering the current situation, it’s unlikely that Paramount will prioritize creating a sequel for the Smurfs movie, given its underwhelming performance thus far. The film received harsh criticism from critics, with a mere 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While audiences found it somewhat enjoyable, their reviews were only average, giving it a B+ on Cinemascore.
The film debuted at the fourth spot at the box office during the weekend, struggling to match the ongoing triumph of both Superman and Jurassic World: Rebirth. Remarkably, the horror movie I Know What You Did Last Summer outperformed Smurfs in its opening weekend. Despite my expectations, I wasn’t let down by Lyonne’s affection for Offerman when I inquired about their characters being romantically involved.
