Recently, Kevin Feige spoke about the potential future of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Mephisto within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In a recent interview, he confirmed that the character would reappear following Ironheart and clarified the reasoning behind Marvel’s delay in introducing this sinister villain. Feige also reminisced about past fan theories surrounding Mephisto and discussed his significant role in upcoming stages of the MCU.
Kevin Feige on if Sacha Baron Cohen’s Mephisto will return
In response to a question about Marvel possibly expanding the use of the character, Kevin Feige confirmed, “Absolutely.” He underscored Mephisto’s significance, stating, “He plays a pivotal role… now that he’s been introduced, his potential is evident” (as reported by Games Radar).
During a recent press gathering, I found myself discussing the intriguing speculations surrounding Mephisto in WandaVision. I made it clear then, and I’ll repeat it now, Mephisto wasn’t part of our storyline for WandaVision. My colleagues Matt (Favreau) and Jack Schaefer have also addressed this topic. However, the excitement generated by fans as they theorized about his potential role was nothing short of thrilling to witness!
Feige discussed the challenge of adapting this character earlier on. He stated, “He’s essentially a devil. How do you portray such a character? Yet, he’s crucial to the narrative. He played a significant role in Thanos’ comic book storyline.” In the comics, Mephisto was first introduced in The Silver Surfer #3 (1968), later becoming a recurring adversary for Spider-Man and a central figure in stories featuring Vision and the Scarlet Witch.
In the final episode of Ironheart, character Riri Williams (played by Dominique Thorne) strikes a cryptic bargain with the villainous Mephisto, marking his entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was later disclosed that Thorne herself was unaware of Cohen’s portrayal of Mephisto until after the filming had concluded, hinting at Marvel’s intention to keep this surprise a secret.
Mephisto shows up just as the Marvel Cinematic Universe shifts from Phase 5 to Phase 6, and with “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” a fresh new chapter begins. As for Tom Hiddleston’s character, Feige’s remarks hint that we can expect Cohen’s portrayal to extend past Ironheart.
It’s still unknown when Mephisto will make his next appearance, but Kevin Feige’s confirmation hints that he might feature in the plotlines of Phase 6 and future phases.
