Henry Cavill had only one request when he was told about Superman recasting
Henry Cavill is the actor who most of us have pictured as Superman for the last dozen years.
Given the circumstances, it wouldn’t be surprising if he became upset about not being included in James Gunn’s fresh start for the DC movie universe (DCU), especially since he was recently reinstated by the studio just two months prior.
Regardless of what Henry Cavill may have privately thought about the matter, it’s been disclosed by James Gunn that, professionally speaking, Cavill made just one demand when informed he wouldn’t be coming back: he wanted the opportunity to personally break the news to the fans himself.

On the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, James Gunn detailed the circumstances surrounding the recasting at DC during that period.
He reminisced about discussing the potential job offer from DC Studios, meeting with David Zaslav and their legal team, and negotiating the terms of our agreements.
On the day the deal was finalized, it seemed unexpected when they announced Henry’s return. I thought to myself, ‘What’s happening here? We already have our plans sorted out.’
Upon entering, it turned out to be quite unfortunate. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. So, Peter [Safran, DCU co-CEO] and I [decided] that the appropriate action was to have a conversation with [Cavill]. And that’s exactly what we did – we sat down and spoke with him.
As a devoted admirer, let me tell you, he was nothing short of a true gentleman, a genuinely wonderful individual. In his own words, “All I request is the opportunity to share my news myself, rather than having it leaked by others.
David Corenswet recently got the role of the next Superman, sparking discussions among fans about whether Henry Cavill might portray Batman in Gunn’s version of the DC multiverse.
While Gunn didn’t explicitly comment on the speculation, he did answer questions regarding if casting Cavill in the DCU could potentially lead to confusion.
He definitely ruled out the idea of taking on another character. That day, he discussed this matter with him. He’s quite keen on involving him in some project or another.
Superman is in cinemas now.
