Andor Writer Confirms the Real Reason Why Bix Left Cassian

Dan Gilroy, brother of the creator and executive producer of Disney+’s Andor, Tony Gilroy, penned several episodes in the series. He played a significant role in crafting one of the show’s most powerful story arcs focusing on the Ghorman Massacre. This narrative thread culminated with Bix Caleen choosing to leave her lover, Cassian Andor, for the sake of the Rebel Alliance. Gilroy provided insight into Bix’s real reasons for departing, a motive that held more significance than her pregnancy with Cassian’s child.

In the ninth episode of Season 2 in the series “Andor”, Cassian finds himself alone as Bix is missing. On the kitchen table, he discovers a datapad with a message from Bix that she had recorded while Cassian was asleep. According to director Dan Gilroy on “The Playlist Podcast”, Bix’s pregnancy was not the primary reason for her departure from Cassian; instead, it served as a secondary factor, with her true objective being her main motivation.

The idea of pregnancy wasn’t my main focus; it was more of a secondary concern. I didn’t even consider it. Instead, I viewed it as a sacrifice. All the sacrifices portrayed in the show, she may not be dying physically, but her sacrifice is significant. And the pattern with these characters who make such sacrifices? In a sense, they’re like martyrs. The best comparison might be found in religion. Believing something is worth giving up everything for is akin to having a religious belief, because you have to believe there’s something more important than yourself.

The fundamental theme of “Andor” revolves around the various shapes the struggle against oppression can assume, as well as the costs one must bear to uphold that fight. Gilroy’s comment encapsulates the essence of “Andor”. Bix felt that Cassian’s fate was triumph, and if his affection for her posed an obstacle, then the entire galaxy might endure.

In the second season of the show ‘Andor’, earlier on, Bix forcibly takes Cassian to a rebel base on Yavin 4. Here, they encounter a healer who specializes in the Force. This woman, who viewers suspect may have interacted with Luke Skywalker, reveals to Cassian a startling truth that he initially dismisses but Bix recognizes as his destiny.

As a film critic, I find myself deeply moved by the profound emotions this movie evokes. Unseen burdens seem to permeate its characters – sorrow, anxiety, yearning. Many beings are defined by their past, carrying it with them like a heavy burden. But not our protagonist, the pilot. His character is unique, almost exceptional. He’s not just moving forward; he’s accumulating as he goes. There’s a purpose to this collection, a clear intent. He’s more than a traveler; he’s a messenger, a vessel for something greater.

Gilroy discussed the elements involved in crafting that scene and how it sheds light on Bix, rather than Cassian.

When penning the Force healer scene, you’re observing it primarily from Cassian’s perspective. Initially, I wasn’t convinced, questioning who this person was and asking them to keep their hand off me. However, as I delved deeper into the writing process, I found myself thinking, ‘Bix is watching this, and it’s resonating strongly.’

Longtime fans of Star Wars will recognize that the healer’s mysterious words proved true. In the 2016 film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which serves as a prequel to Andor, Cassian Andor sacrifices his life to transmit the Death Star plans to the Tantive IV. The original Star Wars movie from 1977, A New Hope, shows the result of Cassian’s selflessness: the Rebel Alliance utilizes those plans to destroy the Empire’s deadliest weapon.

At the climax, I found myself inexplicably drawn to the Force healer’s prediction about me in the series Andor. As I prepared to board my ship for what felt like a predetermined journey, I shared a significant glance with the healer that spoke volumes. It was clear to me, and to many others who closely followed the story, that this was my destiny’s path unfolding. Bix, ever-perceptive, grasped every implication of this moment and held onto it tightly. She understood that the love I may have inspired in her and the reliance she might need on me as we raised our child were insignificant compared to the immense and final mission that lay ahead for me.

Regarded by many as perfect (with only one questionable death considered socially insensitive), the critically-acclaimed series Andor concluded its impressive two-season run on Disney+ in May 2025. Diego Luna played Cassian Andor in the leading role, while Adria Arjona portrayed Bix Caleen, Stellan Skarsgård took on Luthen Rael, and Genevieve O’Reilly starred as Mon Mothma. Supporting actors included Faye Marsay, Elizabeth Dulau, Kyle Soller, and Denise Gough. Andor is now available to stream on Disney+, along with its sequel, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Following the success of Andor, Lucasfilm has several upcoming Star Wars projects in development, including a live-action film (the franchise’s first theatrical release in seven years), another season of Ahsoka, and various animated spin-offs.

A Word on Bix & Cassian’s Sacrifices

In a distant corner of the galaxy years later, I find myself forming an alliance with Finn in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (2017). Encouraging him, I share my belief, “Victory comes not by battling our hatred, but by shielding what we cherish.

This ties into the actions of both Cassian and Bix, notably throughout “Andor” and “Rogue One.” Despite having little in life, Bix always had Cassian. Even during those prolonged periods when he was away on missions with Luthen Rael, she never wavered in her belief that he would return to her.

In that home, Bix offered comfort, companionship, and security, but to persuade Cassian to continue the fight, Bix ultimately chose to let go of it all. Cassian, deeply affected by the Ghorman Massacre, was resolute about leaving the Rebellion in the past episodes. To him, staying with the Alliance held no greater value than what he shared with Bix.

In her video message to Cassian, Bix made it clear that he chose not to express his emotions regarding the issue.

I must leave, and I don’t know my destination or how long I’ll be gone, but right now, I can’t stay here with you. I trust what you said, it’s your choice, and I can’t be the one to make you go. I couldn’t bear the thought of being the reason you leave.

If you ever gave up for me, I would never forgive myself. We need to succeed, we have to overcome them. I believe in your ability to make that happen. I must believe in that.

So, I’m making a choice for both of us. I’m choosing the Rebellion.

Bix voluntarily decided to depart, prioritizing the security of the galaxy over her affection for Cass. It isn’t clear if she was aware of her pregnancy at the time; the series doesn’t provide additional details. This is consistent with Dan Gilroy’s statement that he hadn’t considered the pregnancy when creating that particular scene.

In the Disney+ series “Andor“, each character consistently experiences significant hardships. This was done to emphasize that regardless of whether they’re perceived as good, evil, or neutral, everyone possesses emotions, aspirations, and forms bonds with others, even amidst intense suffering.

Bix endured intense mental torment, frequent nightmares, and a violent attack. She went through most of these ordeals, yearning and hoping for Cassian to save her. This adds poignancy to her actions in Episode 9 of Andor, as she made a heart-wrenching choice – even with Cass being the last anchor in her life, she prioritized the many over the few.

Essentially, at its core, Star Wars emphasizes the idea that choosing to stand for the forces of righteousness, regardless of how small or large your contribution may be, is the most noble action one can take.

The final scene of Andor underscores this idea particularly well. In the wheat field on Mina-Rau, Bix passes by Cassian’s droid, B2-EMO, and stops, looking melancholically yet affectionately at the sky while clutching a child whom Cassian will never meet.
